On campus or off campus accommodation?

Hi, so I’m looking to select possible accommodations for Warwick Uni but the on campus accommodation they offer are all quite pricey: the en-suite rooms start at around £199 per week so basically £200, and i’m not really keen on sharing bathrooms. I began looking for off campus accommodations within Coventry and they look really good with most being £130-170 a week for probably better looking en-suite rooms and even studios.

My main concern is that with going for the off-campus ones is that Coventry will be a new city for me so I won’t be really familiar with getting around which is kind of a scary concept, and as a first year student I’m also worried it will make making friends even harder as typically, in 1st year it’s easier to befriend accommodations mates and just generally easier to make friends on campus rather than off campus. So I don’t entirely know which was to go for….

Honestly, any thoughts on this would be really appreciated!

go student accom only in first year or u will very much struggle to make friends. if you cant afford en-suite, go shared bathrooms as it is usually only sharing with 1 or 2 other people (like you would at home). and shared bathrooms also usually come with cleaners  (but not sure abt warwick!)

Hi, I'm graduating from Warwick this summer and would probably echo what's been said above in that you really should try to live on campus even if it's with a shared bathroom - it's the best way to make friends and find people to move out with for your second and third years. The shared bathrooms are usually only shared with a few people (depends on accom) and they come with cleaners so I wouldn't worry too much.

I know some people who lived off campus during their first year and they really struggled to find people to live with and ended up living in a studio for their entire three years and hated it. Not to say it's not possible to find people to live with, it's just a lot harder.

Have you considered Claycroft? It's £170 a week and the bathroom is only shared with one other person. At the offer holder day they said Bathrooms are usually cleaned 2-3 times a week so it should be ok as long as the other person keeps it tidy.

Most people stay in Rootes, which has shared bathrooms and is known as the party accommodation, being situated at the centre of campus and having quite low rent relative to other accom. I personally stayed in Lakeside as rents used to be a lot cheaper when i started at uni (151/wk), but the accommodation has since been refurbished so I understand that they've hiked the rent quite a bit since then.

I have friends who've lived in a range of accom and honestly it's hard to say which accommodation is the best, but from friend's comments avoid Westwood (purely because it's so far from the main campus), and cryfield standard because the rooms are incredibly small. I visited my mate who lived in cryfield standard in first year and it genuinely was a shoebox sized room. The rest are basically whatever is in your price range and personal preference.

Not super important but it might be worth considering how long a trip to tesco/aldi would take too. The walk from lakeside to tesco is around 30 mins each way, for example. if you look on the campus map you can see that accom like claycroft are closer to the cannon park shopping outlet where the supermarkets are. This is of course if you don't plan to get your groceries delivered instead.

Tip: you'll get asked to fill out an accom preference form at some point. my understanding is that if you put rootes anywhere in your ranking of accom, you are almost certain to get it due to like 50% of all accom being rootes - at least it used to be the case if it isn't still.

Hi,
Although living in a new city can be scary, Coventry is a very friendly city with lots of Warwick students living in various non-Coventry university associated residence because the buses are very direct. Also Warwick university student union will run lots of societies where you can meet new students. And, some accommodation blocks/buildings will run activities inside for different residents to come and meet up and make friends.
Hope this helps
