Hi Lofi_03,

I'm not starting UAP nor Falmouth in September, sorry, but I can give you some advice from my own experience of being a mature student which I hope might help allay some of the concerns you may be feeling about starting uni.

Firstly, you probably already know that 'mature' student really means someone going to uni who isn't straight out of A-Levels and college, aged 18. So there are a vast number of students that will be 'mature' even if they just took one year out and went at 19, they will be mature. So just think of it as being a term that describes someone who hasn't just come straight out of sixth form.

With this in mind, although 30 + might seem old for uni, age really doesn't matter at all at uni. There will, undoubtedly be lots of younger students but equally there will be many, many students who are a lot older than you too. I'm in my 40s and I have never found my age to be an issue with anyone. I am just as involved in uni life as the non-mature students and all the opportunities to join societies, clubs, go to events, work as an ambassador etc are equally available to me and other mature students, as they are to the younger students. I've got friends who are non mature, some my age, and there are people I know who are older than me - there is one lady in a class I had who had retired from a job in her previous life, and post retirement decided she wanted to return to uni to study for a masters degree. Age never comes into it as everyone is treated equally.

Please don't feel worried about the prospect of being older it really doesn't matter and I doubt anyone will even notice that you're a mature student.

I hope this helps but if you want to ask anything else, please do!
Good luck and enjoy your course,
Jess

Hi there! I’m also a mature student (though not 30, I’m still in my twenties) and happen to be stuck trying to make a similar kind of choice. Mine are between Falmouth doing Marine and Natural history or uni of Hertfordshire. I’m glad to hear there’s at least someone else considering the Marine and Natural history as a mature student! Though I don’t know if it’s common or not on the course. Have you made a decision yet?? I haven’t heard of UAP, what were you thinking of studying there?
