Crashing Advanced Higher Maths

Hi, I recently decided to crash AH maths due to my school not being able to accomodate my preffered subjects. Didn't do H because I honestly just hated it but I got around 95% at Nat 5. Planning to do alot of studying over the summer but I will also be preparing for UCAT aswell so I can't dedicate everyday to doing maths. Does any one have any tips or suggestions to cover the H maths course over summer?

Hi, I'm in S5 and have studied higher maths throughout the year. I am sitting the exam in around a weeks time lol so I may not be able to give the best advice, especially because you are aiming to do the huge course in a summer. But, I think it's possible.

You should be aware of key topics like - straight line, polynomials, integration, differentiation, trigonometry, the circle and logarithms. (These are the topics that come to my mind, there are a couple more).

Firstly, if I was in your shoes I would go to the YouTube channel clleland maths where he posts full topic guides on how to answer each type of questions. If you have access to highermaths.co.uk use it, it's an amazing resource which gives you 2024 - 2015 past papers with worked solutions. This means if you went wrong in a question, use the worked solutions to gain a better understanding.

Once you have done this, I would cram past papers as the course is very big and past papers test you on many elements of the course, allowing you to identify weak points which you can practice more to strengthen.

It may sound like a lot, but if you dedicate 2 hours a day (roughly) day by day throughout summer by doing my previous advice I think you will do well. Good luck with the higher course and your UCAT, and thank you for taking the time to read this.

I'd recommend doing a bunch of past papers

Omd that's actually a huge relief I was expecting having to do like 5 hrs a day. Thanks a lot for the help, I will definitely check the youtube channel out. Just searched up the website you recommended I think the web address is for sale:hmmmm:.
Anyways thanks for the advice and good luck with exams!

Hey! Ik folk have already spoke but I’m happy to add to the advice already given if you’re still open to it!

I sat H maths in 2023 and AH maths in 2024 and it actually became my favourite subject in 6th year! I think with enough effort it’s definitely possible to crash it although with the UCAT, you’re setting yourself up for a tough year which is very commendable.

I would say the main topics you want to focus on from higher maths to prepare yourself for AH would be:

Logarithms and exponents (become familiar working with these terms as they are in loads of AH topics).

Really solidify your knowledge of the concepts of differentiation and integration as there is lots of calculus in AH so becoming familiar with the main concepts is key for being able to do the harder stuff.

Be able to differentiate/integrate your basic trig functions too (sinx and cosx - I think it’s called the chain rule? That may be AH, it’s been a while ahah). These aren’t given to you in the AH formula sheet. If you can memorise the H formula sheet then even better as none of those formula will be given to you in the AH exam.

I found functions at H difficult (idk why) and it cause me problems with the AH functions stuff so make sure your comfortable with that so you don’t get confused like me!

There are some topics from higher which you can pretty much abandon as they aren’t in advanced tbh. One that springs to mind is circle. Considering how prominent it is in H, I’m sure it doesn’t appear in AH so I would prioritise other topics first. I don’t remember using it at all in 6th year!!

I think you may also find benefit in revising your N5 maths too. Just working with numbers and equations. Obviously the numbers/equations you will be working with at AH level will be hard so just having the basics is important!

Good luck with it though and I hope you enjoy it as its a good subject imo 😊

Let me know if you have any questions and I can pull my AH notes out and have a look to see if I can answer anything about topics etc!

Thank you so much, I'm honestly looking for any advice and help I can get.

The head of maths in my school did tell me that some H topics are pretty irrelevant in AH so I don't need to cover the whole course as such.

Thank you for the help, I really appreciate it!!

Heyy as someone whos sitting advh maths this year and did higher last year there isnt rlly alot the same in advh i would say go over things like straight line(briefly), differentiation, integration, vectors, functions as some main ones from the top of my head. All of them at ah are new concepts but having the knowledge of the higher course will help a lot. Clelland maths and mr thomas maths are the youtube teachers ive used the past few years. I used clelland for n5 and helped me a lot and i was able to sit the exam early, so work at home with them is 100% able to be done over summer break.

I did H last year and am studing Adv this year, and I’ve been tutoring higher and n5 over the past year. Sounds like your school’s put you in a pretty stressful situation, good luck and make sure to look after yourself! There’s good advice in this thread about topics, are you in need of any resources (notes etc) for learning the higher?

The teacher I spoke to said theres a lot of maths resources on YT and also gave me access to an online textbook. Had a look and it seems like it's good enough to self teach but fingers crossed I actually manage

Hi I’m in a similar situation to you. I want to do medicine and I need higher maths but I’m doing national five applications right now so next year I have to crash higher maths . Hopefully the school lets me cuz I don’t want this to impact my applications.

Hii could you maybe ask your school for material for n5 maths and maybe attempt to do that instead of n5 apps or at least have some prior knowledge before you take the higher, since you’ll already be in the maths department in that time

Hi , yes I was thinking to go over all the larger topics in national five that u need for higher to prepare myself. Do u take higher maths ?

Im taking advh rn and i got an 85% at higher last year if you wanted to you could ask me for help throughout your n5 and higher maths as ill still be in high school and upto knowledge with the courses as im tutoring people with maths at my school (:
Another thing that might make you feel better about the situation is that i only had 2/3 periods a week in n5 maths and was able to teach myself it after prelims and achieve an A ( only had 2 periods because i was sitting the exam early )

For medicine I think H physics is also an option instead of H maths but depends whatever you're more interested in

People go from having 90% in Nat 5 maths to C/Ds in highers and from 90% in higher to failing advanced higher maths. Now this varies but the foundational knowledge required for AH maths is just to phenomenal to jump start from Nat 5. I've averaged a 90% in higher maths and I've seen adv higher maths and it scares me there's no time for you to learn to basics. You haven't done complex trig to even begin doing secant, cosecant, you haven't done trinomiqls to even start understanding complex planes and imaginary roots, you haven't done any calculus and you can't jump straight to polar integration, volumes of revolution, without vectors you can't even begin to understand matrices, and so on its just impossible even more impossible to get a good grade, like you can do it and maybe scrape a C at maximum but atp is it really worth it you're better off just doing higher maths. Now even if you attempted to learn the entire higher maths content during the summer that will be even more impossible because it's not just to learn the content but to know how to apply it complexly to the level required in AH
