An Overview of Knights Park Campus

Hi everyone,

As many of you may be coming to study on the Knights Park campus in September, I thought I would give you an overview of what it is like.

Knights Park is the Kingston School of Art campus and its closet accommodation is Middle Mill which is just over the bridge (literally a minute walk away!). Knights Park students also often stay in Seething Wells and Clayhill and get the bus, walk or cycle. It is one of the four campuses here at Kingston, I will add a link to a previous post I did that gives a small overview of all four.

An Overview of Kingston's Four Campuses

Knights Park is about a 10 minute walk from the Penrhyn Road campus and 10 minutes from Kingston town centre and 15 from the train station.

When you first walk into Knights Park you will find yourself in the reception area. The art shop is located here where you can get materials for a discounted price. Also, students often hold exhibitions in the reception space, which is good for inspiration to see different projects students have been working on. Then behind the reception area there are lots of benches, chairs and social spaces for students to sit or often students run bake sales and have stalls selling things they have made. As soon as you get to Knights Park it feels very collaborative and creative.

If you go right you will end up in the library which is catered to art students with macs, printers and a range of other recourses and books you will find useful. There is both more social spaces and quite spaces as well as study rooms you can book to do your work. You can also loan laptops, there is really everything you need and the library staff are helpful with everything from technical queries to locating the resources you might need.

Above and overlooking the library is the fashion department. This has studio spaces, rooms with industrial machines, knit machines and a fashion archive that anyone can access no matter what they study.

In the new extension is most of the other subject’s studio spaces and teaching rooms, which are great places to go and do work if you want a change of scenery from the library.

In the lower floors of the new extension are the workshops, which again are open to any students no matter what they study, as long as you get inducted. There are a range of different workshops from printmaking, 3D materials, moving image, photography, and digital media. Here are some links to posts some of the other reps have done in more detail about the workshops:

The campus also has a canteen that serves a range of hot and cold food, as well as microwaves so you can save money and bring your own food to reheat. There is seating inside, but one of my favourite things about Knights Park is the outside seating along the river! It is such a lovely sun trap creating a nice place to go, sit, eat and relax.

The outdoor space is also next to the student bar so you can take your pint outside. The student bar is open Wednesday to Friday and has a happy hour. Throughout the campus you will see lots of posters on the walls which are often referring to student run events happening in the bar such as DJ events, pub quizzes and paint and sip. They are often fundraisers for one of the courses at Knights Park, so it is good to support students as well as having a really fun night.

I have a whole post about students events, that I would definitely read as there is so much going on: Student Organised Events Happening at Kingston University

Surrounding the main part of the campus is like I said the Middle Mill accommodation, as well as the Stanley Picker Art gallery where students can exhibit their work or even get a part time job. There is also The Swan, which again is used to exhibit student work,

I hope this gives you an idea of what it is like and if you have any questions feel free to ask 😊
