Warwick university applications

Hi, I’m in year 12 and I didn’t do too well on my GCSEs I recorded a 5 in English language and a 7 in maths. My GCSEs range from 3-7. I messed up on my GCSEs because of something that happened in my life. I want to apply to Warwick and I want to do a finance and accountancy degree. I want to use extenuating circumstances and see if they will accept me. I take economics psychology and maths. At the beginning of the year I was on a predicted grade of a D/C now I’m on a predicted grade of A/B and hopefully after my mocks I will be on As. Do you think there is a point of applying and will I get in as I really want to go to Warwick.
Hi Habibah,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your journey. I would say please be aware that their asking grades are A*AA with an A in Maths. It looks like at the moment they specify a 6 in Eng Lang at GCSE and a 7 in at least one humanities/social science subject at GCSE. Therefore you would have to ring up their admissions team to ask what they would/would not accept with regards to GCSEs, and whether they'd take your extenuating circumstances into account - they may be able to still consider you but you would have to check.

Depending on what they say, I would say that somewhere like Warwick may be a good option for you to apply to as an aspirational choice, as long as your other choices are pitched at the same level as your predicted grades and you have at least one choice you can use for an insurance which will be asking for 1-2 grades below your predicted grades.

First things first I would get in touch with their admissions team to see what they say about your GCSEs and your extenuating circumstances, and then you can decide from there whether you'd like to try applying or not.

I hope this helps and best of luck! 🙂

Hi, does using extenuating circumstances mean anything then. As I want to apply to finance and accounting and it’s a bit easier to get into than other courses there. As I have improved a lot this year and I’ve done work experience and been in more extra curricular.

Yes, fortunately they do take extenuating circumstances into account. I can confirm this as this has literally happened to me this year. I’ve received an offer from Warwick and I didn’t do great GCSE’s either due to extenuating circumstances; achieved a 5 in English language and averaged 6’s on the rest (I even had a 4 in art, although it’s an irrelevant GCSE, a 4 is still a bad look on your profile). I always wanted to go to a target university but I always thought I had no chance due to having a mediocre set of GCSE’s, which really saddened me. I applied either ways but made sure to contact the admissions team beforehand to explain my situation and ask whether they’d still consider me and have all the right information. I applied for PPE (an extremely competitive course) and I still got an offer! So anything is possible despite your circumstances. My only advise is that you have to work extremely hard. I was failing all my subjects at the start of year 12 (even Spanish when I’m literally Spanish💀) but then I locked tf in and got amazing predicted grades. Don’t give up, anything is possible (with God ofc), just work hard from now onwards.
