Clearing before officially dropping out?

I am currently in my first year studying Computer Science, but would like to drop out to either change courses in the new academic year (at a new uni) or take a gap year. I haven't officially left my uni because I don't want to have to repay my SFE (because of rent), and I'm pretty sure I can't quit until 31/8 otherwise I will have to repay the amount to SFE.

I am confused as to whether I can apply through clearing without having submitted a UCAS application, and do I just call any uni I am interested in with their course (I have forgotten how the process works)?
Additionally, am I able to even accept an offer from a university until I have told my university I am quitting or would it be considered transferring?

Any help is welcome.

You will need to make a UCAS application for 2025 entry. Is the course you want still open to applications for 2025? Call the uni(s) to check this and if it is open, apply now.

And yes you can apply this cycle before you formally withdraw from your current uni. Your reference will need to be supplied by your uni so talk to your course tutor.

It isnt clear if you want 1st year entry or 2nd year transfer but either way, you need to set up a formal UCAS application to apply for any place at another Uni - but you can approach Uni now and ask about a place. Just be aware that you must declare your current study and that they will want to see your grade transcript and will want a reference from your current Uni so its best to tell someone like your Personal Tutor that you are going to do this. Yes, once you have a confirmed place somewhere else, you can then tell your current Uni you will be leaving but not if your new Uni requires you to finish your 1st year / achieve specific grades.
Note that now the January deadline has passed applications are first come-first served (and if you want to transfer into year 2 then those applications take more time to consider). So prioritising getting your UCAS application in asap should be your focus.

Your enrolment on your current course is unaffected by applications elsewhere and your tutor should be able to provide a UCAS reference if you just explain that you want to explore your options elsewhere.
