extended essay ib advice

how did you do it, what advice would you give, what are some things you did to help yourself with the essay writing process when nobody else (even your supervisor) was actually helpful? what are some online resources you would recommend? etc.
thank you so much in advance. I'd really appreciate any responses

EDIT: I have now submitted my final EE and won't be watching this thread anymore. However, if anyone has any useful advice to give, I recommend you share them anyway as I'm sure they may still benefit current/future EE students on this thread.

Bro just get it done before decemeber at the latest. I did french- it was hell. Pick a subject where you’ll have a good supervisor- not necessarily the subject you’ll prefer. The EE is marked so randomly like most people don’t get the grade it gets sent off with like they all come back with some upgraded some downgraded- it’s really difficult to predict grades accurately for it. Just produce what you can then submit it you exams will get you more points and are worth more than the EE anyways

This depends on your subject. But no matter what you pick, I highly recommend reading the IB official materials in depth:

Extended essay guide + subject specific guide outlines the requirements

Example essays with reflections, marks and comments gives a good idea of the level of quality they are looking for

Subject reports basically a report of the entire DP cohort's performance in a certain year, outlining their mistakes

Just by reading all of this and making sure you have everything they ask for, and don't do anything they identify as common mistakes, you're already guaranteed a fair amt of marks.

I just submitted my EE in Bio so I have a lot of advice.
Pick something you enjoy/find interesting. DO NOT MAKE IT HARDER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE!!
It is hard to limit yourself to one topic, so do what feels right. (If you don't think there will be a lot of sources/info then you're probably right) It's a big essay and you need a lot of information.

Research will be hard, but it is vital that you do a lot of research. Find more sources than you think you need! Most importantly, keep track of all of your sources, if it's a link or citation, make sure you can find it!

Early on in researching I pulled a lot of quotes or results or background and put that into my document and put a link to the source, which saved me later on.

I found what worked for me was doing a little work at a time. I tried to focus on a specific section when working to avoid getting overwhelmed. Try not to worry about the big picture, have an idea but do not sweat too much about meeting the work count. Worst case scenario you just explain more. (Which you should do.) Make sure to be very explicit about every point you are making! It might feel weird but explain everything! Every source, quote, photo, graph, and data.

I do not know where you are in the process of EE and what subject but last year everyone in my class barely finished a rough draft before the end of the year, me included. So it is NEVER too early to start making an outline or rough draft!!! Group your research together into a section, it's ok if you change it later, but it's better to have something to go based off.

I recommend working over the summer, I locked in and turned my rough draft that was more of an outline into an actual rough draft. It was worth the time. Of course, you know what you need to do.

My supervisor didn't help much and only told me that I needed to add more data into my EE. So I recommend reading example EE's in your subject, high and low scores. Also make sure to completely read the subject guide for what you should include.

I wish you the best of luck with your EE! If I did it so can you! (let me know if you have any other questions, I'm happy to help)
