A girl studying two of the same A Level's as me is quite friendly to me. She lends me paper when I need it and she often asks me questions and initiates conversations in which she discusses our courses with me. I heard her discussing to her friends back late last year about her having a boyfriend but about two months ago I heard her reading out a text message to her friends from someone saying that they should ''go their separate ways.'' Does that mean that she's broken up with her boyfriend do you think? I am planning on maybe asking her out next time she starts talking to me as she appears to be relatively interested in me. Do you guys think this is a good idea?

i'm all for doing things and asking people out when you're into them, but i think you should really double-check whether this girl is interested, or just being nice!!
there's also still the chance she still has a boyfriend which may be slightly problematic for you... you could ask her directly if you want, which could lead into you asking her out to do something together?
and if she does have a bf, then you may need to, like, not do that, but there will always be other people (:

What kind or conversation are these? Is it something to do with the work or just small talk, or perhaps is it banter? I would probably ask one of her friends if she’s back with her boyfriend, just to be sure!

Ask her if she's still in a relationship and if not let her know you're interested. I know teenager/young adult coyness still exists, but that gets you nowhere. Summon the confidence to get the answers you want. I know you might fear potential blowback and rejection, but hey at least you asked and got an answer.
