Regarding Uni/Apprenticeships Requirements

I'm a year 12 student, and like so i was wondering so during gcse's everything else apart from english lang, i got a grade 7 but for my english language ( i got a grade 5 but i was 1 mark away from a grade 6 ,[I have proof too] ) and like all these universities, and apprentiships, they r asking minimum grade 6 gcse engloish lang.

thats making me rlly stressed out even tho im only in yr 12, i dont want to resit english lang since thats gonna waste a lot of my year.
I was hoping anyone would help to see if that grade would be a really bad problem.

Hi @superguy6552,

First of all, well done on a strong set of GCSE results overall!

Although some universities and apprenticeships might list a Grade 6 in GCSE English Language depending on the field, this isn’t universal many accept a Grade 4 as the minimum. More importantly, universities care more about your post-16 qualifications and UCAS tariff. Right now, your priority should be doing your best in your current studies.

A few tips:

Research your options Not all universities or apprenticeship providers are the same. Check the specific entry requirements for the courses or schemes you're interested in and make a list. You might find they’re more flexible than you think.

Contact admissions teams If a course you’re interested in does ask for a Grade 6, it’s worth getting in touch with the admissions team. Explain that you were only one mark off (and have evidence), and ask whether they’d still consider your application.

Focus on your personal statement This is your chance to highlight your strengths, achievements, and relevant experiences beyond your grades.

Hope that helps! 🙂

What degree subject are you looking at?
What are you A level subjects and realistic grade expectations?

Hi there,

Most university courses require at least a GCSE grade 4 (or C) in English Language.

Some may require a grade 6, and this depends on the uni. What uni's are you looking at and what course are you looking at?

Please do not worry as most uni's will be looking at your BTEC/A-Level qualifications. Say, for example, you get AAA in maths, biology and chemistry and you would like to do biochemsitry at uni - no one is going to reject you because you got a 5 in English Language. I know many people who got a 5 in english language and went on to do degrees in Psychology. Do not panic!

no one is going to reject you because you got a 5 in English Language.

They will if they explicitly require a grade 6 or above - and many top Unis for Psych will require this.

Good luck with your application! Again, do not stress. As long as you meet the post-16 requirements for your finance degree apprenticeship, you will be fine!
