OCR A Level Classics World of the Hero comparative question

Hi, I’m panicking slightly as to how to structure/answer Q7 (the comparative question) on paper 1 for classics A Level. My teacher previously said 5 points (3-2 for Odyssey-Aeneid or the other way around) just saying where there were examples of what the question was asking. But I was looking at exemplar answers and examiner commentary and they all say they need more comparative approaches. Can someone please help me?

The above link is a really good aid in writing comparative 10 markers. For the most part you will only need 4 - 5 points that include both a homeric and aeneid example as your job is to compare them and make a judgemnt on based on what the question is asking (if that makes sence).

for example:
Point #)

the argument being made, example (homeric or aenied) to agree/dissagree with the question

example (of the opposite text to the first example, if the point is homeric, this example is aeneid and visa versa) that shows the point to be true.

So, if I were being asked whether Odysseus or Hector is more heroic, my first point may be that Hector is more heroic, based on 'xyz' quote. And the next sentence for that point will be an example quote 'xyz' from the Odyssey text to show that Odysseus is less heroic than Hector.

Making it comparative is key, so if it was like "which extract is a more violent depiction or war", rather than doing half od your answer on why one extract is violent and then half on why the other is, try to pull points that mirror or show similarities, like saying "Homer shows a violent depiction of war through the description of young people dying in the line "insert quote". Similarly, Virgil also uses references of innocent, young people dying when he writes "insert quote", showing how both extracts create a violent and sad depiction of war" or say something like "both homer and virgil use descriptive language to create a violent depiction of war. However, I believe that when comparing extracts, Homer's depiction of death as "insert quote" is more violent than Virgil's portrayl of it as "insert quote", as the way in which people are killed in the iliad extract is far more descriptive and gruesome, therefore showing war as more violent" - so each point should be comparative if that makes sense!

Idk thats just a quick example so don't quote me on it!! But just make sure it's comparative, every time you have a point from one extract try compare it to a point from another (either as something similar or contrasting)!!

Hope that helps to some extent and good luck on the exam tomorrow!!

Thank you so much, I only had time for 3 points of comparison in Q7 so I’m kicking myself - do you think it will be okay? I managed 5 points for the other 10 markers though

Of your three points were strong enough then yeah, 6-8/10 could still be possible!

I think it was okay on the whole. The paper was a gift but I was quite pushed for time. I only got 3 scholars into my thirty marker and I’m kind of annoyed about only getting 3 points into the comparative 10. But oh well, nothing to be done now!
