How Shakespeare presents the idea of the supernatural in the play as a whole
Shakespeare presents the idea of the supernatural through the three witches. He uses the character of Macbeth and Banquo to emphasize the power of the supernatural and fate. Shakespeare deliberately uses the witches as the catalysts of chaos to flatter king James and his ideas about the witches.
Shakespeare explores the ideas of the supernatural through the weird sisters. As at the start of the play one says “Shall we meet in thunder, lighting or rain” this shows that they have the power to control the weather, this could also mean that they have the power to control peoples mind and feelings as the weather could mean human emotions. Even though the witches have power they are described by Banquo as “you should be women, yet your beards forbid me to interpret it” suggesting that they present both female and male traits: they are feminine but have the masculinity and power of a man. This could also mean that they control Macbeth in order to gain status as in the Jacobean society women had to be born or married into power there for they need a powerful man in order to reach power. This suggests that the witches are not telling Macbeth what to do as they only said ” hail Macbeth thane of Cawdor, Macbeth shall be king” Showing that they have never controlled Macbeth. They may have the power to see into the future therefor telling Macbeth and Banquo the prophecies but they never tell then what to do. This could mean that instead of being the “instruments of Darkness” they are the instruments of fate as Macbeth is thane of Cawdor once he returns showing that fate had decided the life of Macbeth. Perhaps Shakespeare could have done this to show that the supernatural are in line with fate. Shakespeare could have used this cautionary play to stop King James from provoking the Catholics. Shakespeare could have also done this to shed light of the ways in which women are treated by in society and how they must manipulate men to reach power as they are seen as lower than men in society. As Lad Macbeth is described as ‘Fiend like queen’ at the end of the play.
Shakespeare presents the idea of the supernatural through the moral struggles of Macbeth and his psychological state. After hearing the prophecies Macbeth says “why do I yield to that suggestion, horrible image unfix my hair” as he is thinking of killing Duncan. This shows that the witches’ prophecies are true and fate will decide when Macbeth will become king however Macbeth starts thinking of murder let not “light see my deep and black desires”. This suggests that Macbeth has moral evil inside of him as light could be referring to god and how his ‘desires’ are growing more bigger, his morals are stain ‘black’. This could also foreshadow Macbeth calling for “great Neptune's oceans wash this hand clean”. This indicates that Macbeth already had evil inside of him and the witches had awakened the evil inside of him. This shows that the witches are instruments of chaos as through the second meeting with the witches the second one says” by the pricking of my thumbs something evil comes this way”. The world evil indicates that Macbeth is more evil than they are and their purpose is to toy with his feeling leading to his demise. Perhaps Shakespeare had done this to show how in the bible witches cannot directly affect man therefor they must use the weaknesses of others to spread there chaos. This was Macbeths hamartia; his ambition. Shakespeare could have also done this to flatter king James as he wrote the book Demonology to express his fear in witches. This cautionary tale is warning to the nobles in court that their actions against the great chain of being could turn fate against them leading to them being toyed by the supernatural.
Shakespeare explores the amount of power the supernatural has over humans through the character of Banquo and Lady Macbeth. Through the prophesies the power of the witches can be resisted as Banquo’s morals are more powerful and more loyal to his religion and his king. He calls them the ”instruments of Darkness” implying he knows they are evil and are trying to toy with them. The word darkness suggests that they are corrupt and could further suggest that they are agents of chaos. But the word ‘instruments’ suggests that they are played by the devil and not as powerful as they seem therefor Banquo could resist them. The supernatural is also shown through the ‘spirits’ that lady Macbeth calls “come you evil spirits unsex me here” the phrase ”unsex me here” implies that the supernatural have the power to remove feminine traits and replace them with strong power. The supernatural is described as ‘evil spirits’ suggesting that they are inline with darkness and there only purpose is to destroy the minds of those they are toying with. By removing the feminine traits of lady Macbeth, she dominates Macbeth saying he is too ‘’full of the milk of human kindness’’ but by the end of act 5 she is calling for her femininity with “this little hand”. This shows the dangers of calling the supernatural as there only purpose is to spread chaos. Shakespeare uses the supernatural to warn nobles around the king not to aspire against him as they will be toyed by the supernatural and will be forced to shame away from their Christian God.
