marked down for not including a (not very important) form in dissertation appendices?

So I submitted my dissertation a few days ago and alongside I also submitted all my raw data + appendices (consent form, ethics form, participant info etc) but one form I didn’t get signed was the lab training form which is essentially just a signature saying you went for lab training. It was never mentioned throughout the year or anywhere on the module page except for two small sections in the diss guidelines, where it just says to upload it with the appendices.

And while it’s arguably the least important piece of info that was listed (cuz it doesn’t relate to ethics or the actual piece of work it’s just a form saying I went for training, and my supervisor is aware that I went for training), I’m a bit worried that they’re gonna try penalise me or something for not including it. They’ve also never mentioned that not uploading it will result in penalisation or anything, but I’m just worried that theyre gonna make a big deal about it

I emailed my supervisor asking if I still needed it and if yes then I was happy to upload it to the folder but I’m worried that it would class as a late submission or something. Just wanted to know if anyone went through the same thing (ie forgetting to upload appendices/data alongside their diss) and what happened eventually, or if anyone knows anything about this and how they might handle it?
Hi, I've moved your thread to the university life forum

To be fair I'd point out while it may seem like an unimportant form to you, the lab training would presumably be effectively your health and safety training and that is a big deal in both universities and corporations - less so about whether you actually were safe and moreso to prove they did provide the training that nominally protects them legally from adverse outcomes. Just something to keep in mind because even after you leave uni, you're going to have to do these seemingly unimportant tick box exercises regularly in any job and even if it doesn't matter to you, it matters to someone and eventually they will make it your problem!

In terms of how it will affect your dissertation mark, I think that's probably going to be down to local regulations. I'd recommend checking with your supervisor and/or personal tutor, and if need be your student union. I would be surprised if it had an outsized effect on things but they should be able to confirm for certain!

Hi there,

Its good that you realised soon after submitting and then emailed your supervisor quickly!

Hopefully, if they didn't make a big thing about saying it needed to be put at the end then it won't be too much of an issue, especially if your supervisor knows that you definitely already did the lab training. I think all you can do now is wait for a response and see!

On the other hand, it is likely that you will be downgraded for this, as it was mentioned in the diss guidelines that it should be included. Do you have access to the marking rubric for your dissertation? Usually they split each section into a certain number of marks. For example, this is how my dissertation was marked:

Abstract - 10 marks
Intro - 20 marks
Method - 20 marks
Results - 20 marks
Discussion + Conclusion - 20 marks
Structure, grammar, referencing, appendices - 10 marks

If yours is being marked a similar way, it is highly likely that you would only lose a max of 2-3 marks for missing it from the appendices, if that. Lets hope for the best though and that your supervisor says its okay!

Hope this puts your mind at rest a little? Good luck!

Hi we do have a marking criteria, and appendices aren’t listed there at all. It’s just the 5 required aspects (intro, methods, results, discussion, refs), thesis organisation and ‘use of supervisor time’. The closest thing is ‘timely submission of ethics and formative work’ in which this does not fall under any of them.

And honestly I’m fine losing like a couple marks, especially since it’s one missing document out of everything which I have uploaded. I’m just gonna have a problem if they try to penalise me heavily
