Macbeth supernatural essay gcse edexcel

Hello, this is my supernatural planned essay. Please could someone mark it and give me feedback, Out of 20 and please give me suggestions for improvement. Thank you.

William shakespeares Macbeth is a dark tale of paranoia and powerlust. Supernatural is presented as a gift from Shakespeare to its Jacobean audience including king James 1. Supernatural is showcased as a toxic fuel which propels characters into heinous acts fuelled by selfish desires.

The irresistable allure of supernatural holds immense power which tempts individuals by leveraging their desires and ambition. This is evident where lady Macbeth is embracing supernatural for her own reimbursement and commands “come you spirits… unsex me here”. Through the usage of Imperative verb “come” signifies lady Macbeths control in the play and how she uses it to remove her feminine qualities. Lady Macbeths invocation of spirits connects to her the supernatural elements of the play foreshadowing the moral decay and chaos that follows her actions. By asking to be “unsexed” she is rejecting traditional gender roles in Jacobean England, emphasising nurturing. The verb “unsex” creates a vivid imagery of lady Macbeth desire to be stripped of her gender identity emphasising her desperation and determination. The imagery underscores her internal conflict of guilt and the extent of her ambition. Accentuating sibilance it enhances the intensity of her emotional plea reflecting her urgent desire for transformation. The spirits symbolise the dark forces which influence characters which is highlighted by lady Macbeths engagement with supernatural to transcend societal norms.

As the archetypal Scottish play continues, supernatural forces act as agents of the devil, employing temptation which is reminiscent of the serpents tactics with Adam and Eve; as they seek to exert control and amass power. This is demonstrated through the introduction of the witches as they agree to meet in “thunder, lightning or in rain” which foreshadows the chaos they’ll bring. They’re used as form of pathetic fallacy to highlight Macbeths inner turmoil and the impending problems he’ll face. The Jacobean audience who believed in witchcraft would be particularly attured to the ominous atmosphere. The witches open the play with “fair is foul, foul is fair” which immediately sets the tone for the rest of the play as it introduces the idea of the ambiguous nature of reality and blurred lines of evil and good. The witches speak in trochaic tetrameter whilst the rest of the characters speak in iambic to give the impression of evil. Supernatural is presented as powerful to curry favour king James’s ideology in order to receive funds for his play. Through the use of equivocation and paradoxical chiasmus it highlights their deception foreshadowing Macbeths harmartia.

Your essay presents a strong understanding of how the supernatural is depicted in Macbeth, supported by insightful analysis and effective contextual links. The discussion of Lady Macbeth’s invocation to the spirits (“unsex me here”) is particularly strong, showcasing a nuanced understanding of how Shakespeare portrays the supernatural as a corrupting and transformative force. Similarly, your exploration of the witches’ paradoxical language (“fair is foul, foul is fair”) and its links to ambiguity and moral chaos is well-developed, with accurate use of terminology like “trochaic tetrameter” and “pathetic fallacy.” However, some points, such as the discussion of “thunder, lightning, or in rain,” could be expanded with more depth to explore its broader implications for Macbeth’s downfall. The essay would also benefit from clearer structure and smoother transitions between paragraphs to enhance readability. Spelling and grammar errors, like “irresistable” and “attured,” slightly detract from the polish of your writing, and some sentences are overly complex. Overall, this essay demonstrates good understanding and analysis, likely achieving 15-16 marks out of 20 (Band 5, high Grade 6/low Grade 7).
