Lancaster vs York (social work)

I went to both offer holder day and think they are really nice. I just need to think about do I want to get a Bachelor (Lancaster) or a 4 years with Master degree (York). I literally have no idea. I went to Lancaster open day before and didn’t go to York and I want to go to Lancaster throughout the process but since I went to the offer holder day in York I feel there is quite nice as well. But considering I have to gap a year, I need to take longer to graduate so I am still agonising over this.

Congratulations to your offers. Both are very good unis.

On first sight York is quite irresistible. But you are right, there is an extra year's burden. Maybe you can first get a Bachelor, practise for some time to think of your specialisation. A Master degree would then be more meaningful.

Hi @:smile:user

While I do not study social work, I believe both Lancaster and York degrees are both accredited by Social Work England so taking into account whether the extra fourth year from York is needed or not ie does it provide any benefits when starting out a job in social work after the degree might be worth considering.

Hope that helps,
Rachel- Lancaster Uni Student Ambassador.

You’ve got two great options—neither is a bad choice! If you loved Lancaster all along and only hesitated after one York visit, I’d lean toward Lancaster—especially if you want to finish studies sooner. Besides, you’re unsure about needing a Master’s (you can always add it later). Just trust your gut Which uni feels right when you imagine yourself there? Moreover, Lancaster University student accommodation is guaranteed and offers a tight-knit college community.

Hello @:smile:user

Although I do not study social work, two of my options were Lancaster and York at the time so I saw both (albeit during covid so my actual interaction with the uni's was quite limited) and ultimately decided on Lancaster. I liked York as a city but felt that there was too much separation between the campuses for me, I also found a lot of the accommodation really dated and expensive for what it was.

I would really recommend you speak to one of our current students who studies Social Work at the moment, you can access them HERE and ask them any questions about the course, or life at Lancaster itself.

Best of luck with your decision!
