How is the supernatural presented in Macbeth?

Supernatural presented in multiple ways in Macbeth. It is shown in Macbeth hallucinations and also widely surrounded with the witches and their prophecies. Shakespeare uses a supernatural to highlight the severity of the consequences of unchecked ambition and acts of treason.

The supernatural is not an unknown force presented in Macbeth, some of the characters can realise what a supernatural and what is not. For example in act one scene three, Banquo refers to the witches as “instruments of darkness” in the quote “instruments of darkness tell us truth only to betray us” instruments are objects that are typically played which could refer to the fact and foreshadow that a character or multiple character characters are going to be played or used by the witches. Pathetic fallacy is used in “darkness” showing that these characters will be used in an evil and dark way. In this quote, Banquo is saying some things will be true but then they will betray. For instance in act one scene three they tell him clear truth and an act for scene one they speak in riddance. The witches Pull Macbeth in with the first set of prophecies which makes the witches gain his trust and then they portray him and use Macbeth to kill the king. The witches use Macbeth to target King ship because in the Jacobian society which is were seen as evil and people burned them and threw them off cliffs therefore the witches want to kill God’s body on Earth (the king) in retaliation. Through this quote, Banquo is essentially for shadowing the entire play warning Macbeth against the witches and to never trust a supernatural. Through the ways of telling the future and betrayal, this is one of the ways supernatural is portrayed in Macbeth.

Another quote used in act one to present the supernatural is open in thunder lightning or in rain” one of the ways is present the supernatural which is by showing how powerful the witches are by being able to choose between Weather. However this quote is good potentially have a deeper meaning and for shadowed the entire play. The majority of Shakespeare plays open with a prologue, and act on scene one of Macbeth could be viewed as an unofficial prologue “thunder” is an event that is heard, and this coming first reflects all the talking done to Macbeth in the first act, which is mostly made up of manipulation from Lady Macbeth and the witches. However after thunder there is ‘lightning’ which can be seen as a typically more rare scenario. It is not often someone gets struck by lightning and it is also not often Kings get stabbed in their own beds. After the “lightning” comes, there is ‘rain’ and rain is not rare. Everyone gets wet, like everyone suffers after Macbeth kills King Duncan for example Malcolm and Donalbain flee, lady Macduff and her children are killed, Banquo is slain and Duncan is murdered. This is a great portrayal of the supernatural power of the witches, orchestrating this chain of event and being the only ones in the play unaffected by Macbeth’s tyranny and ambition. The rain has left nobody else all the way from the king to the children. This is one of the ways to supernatural is presented in Macbeth.

Your essay demonstrates a clear understanding of how the supernatural is presented in Macbeth, with some thoughtful analysis of key quotes and their implications. This would likely place it in Level 3 (Band 4-6) on the AQA GCSE English Literature Paper 1 mark scheme, achieving around 17-19 marks out of 34. To improve, focus on organizing your argument more cohesively, ensuring each paragraph develops a single clear point that ties directly to the essay question. While your interpretation of quotes is insightful, aim to provide more concise and precise language when explaining your analysis. Additionally, more contextual references (e.g., the Jacobean audience’s view on the divine right of kings) would deepen your response and help you secure a higher grade, potentially moving from a grade 5-6 towards a 7 or 8 with refinement.
