Newcastle as a city?

I visited Newcastle uni for the first time on an open day and absolutely loved the campus, so I'm strongly considering firming it. The only thing is that I wasn't fully sold on the city - I'm not sure if it just happened to be busy on the day i was there, but the city centre was absolutely PACKED, like the same level of busy as when I visited London which made it hard to get a feel for the place.

Could any current students share their honest opinions on the city itself rather than the uni? Is it always really busy, is there much to do, how safe is it in the evening/night compared to other cities etc? I've also visited Liverpool and loved the city but liked the campus and accommodation less than Newcastle, so I'm a bit torn

Hi @iizzyxx !

I'm glad you enjoyed your Open Day with us 😊.

I recently graduated with a degree in Psychology from Newcastle University and I am originally from Cumbria - so pretty much in the middle of nowhere! I found Newcastle to be a comfortable step up in terms of how busy it usually is. It is well-connected to the beach and Northumberland, plus the city itself is quite small and walkable. On sunny days or Newcastle Match Days, you might find that the city is a bit busier. But, I never found it too overwhelming even as a first year!

In terms of safety, I have never felt unsafe walking at night. The campus itself has 24/7 security and we use an app called SafeZone which can put you in touch with security or medical assistance with the touch of a button. When I first came to study here, we would walk back to our accommodation in groups (whether with your flat or other friends from the same accommodation). This made me feel a bit more secure whilst I was still getting used to navigating the city!

I hope this has been helpful! 🥰

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks 💫
