University living costs

I graduated a few years ago after studying a Masters at university. I have lived in uni accommodation that pay for your bills and also accommodation where you have to pay for all bills. It was a real struggle at the time especially when my maintenance loan didn’t cover my rent let alone bills. What’s the cost of living like for university students now. Do you believe there’s enough financial support out there if you don’t have family or friends to fall back on?

Hi @Sick0_M0de

From my experience, the cost of living depends on the city where the university is located. If you’re based in a big city, accommodation and housing can become quite expensive due to high demand.

While things like grocery shopping and everyday spending can be budgeted for, bills are something you can’t avoid, especially if they’re not included in your rent. This can be tough, especially if you don’t have family or friends to fall back on.

On the bright side, some courses do come with extra financial support. For example, if you’re doing a healthcare-related course, you might be eligible for an NHS bursary. There are also other bursaries and grants available depending on your circumstances. I’d definitely recommend looking at the university’s website or asking them directly about what financial support they offer.
