Oxford or Cambridge best in uk for law? Direct answers if possible.

I’m looking for a clear answer regarding the question above.

I’m aware that they’re the top 2, and most sources say ‘it’s down to preference’ due to how close they are, however if looking for the very best possible law school out of the two for undergrad, which one and why( e.g. faculty, research, alumni, reputation for law, rankings, rep in legal industry) - all things considered from anyone who is in a position to give an informed answer.

Note- Use postgrad as an example, Oxfords BCL is seen as gold standard, with Cambridge LLM a universally accepted ‘second place’ - I’m looking for the equivalent cut throat decision of which is better at undergrad before this. Cambridge BA then Oxford BCL or both Oxford BA and Oxford BCL?

Many thanks in advance.

Worth also questioning the old Oxford for humanities, Cambridge for STEM idea- I’m aware this premise has conflicted views, but an interesting consideration for law nonetheless for deciding on which is number 1 for undergrad.

The reason you're not finding a clear answer is because there isn't one. They're basically equally reputed. That's your direct answer.

So you’d argue that at undergrad level for law there is literally no difference in which is chosen?- in the way there is at postgraduate level.

You are asking how many angels can dance on the point of a pin. Even Oxford and Cambridge gave up doing that centuries ago. There is no practical difference between the two universities in real world standing.

The league tables that various media publish every year are meaningless, based as they are on often fatuous measurements and subjective judgments.

Is this a pub-style list of the two, five, or ten best football teams, or are you are fretting about the possibility that if you study at one of the two universities in question you might be infinitesimally less well educated than you would have been had you studied at the other? If the latter: (1) worry about that after one of them makes you an offer of a place, and not before, and (2) get a grip!

PS: The chances of you not landing that fat job in the megabucks law firm, or not becoming Lord/Lady Chief Justice, or whatever, because you chose the "wrong" old English university (assuming that one of those universities chooses you) are NIL.

The BCL at Oxford and and LLM at Cambridge both require a "First-Class" honours degree. From the profiles I've seen in the handbook and Linkedln for Oxford BCL intakes in prior years it is mostly dominanted by:

Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, KCL, QMUL, SOAS, City St. George's, Durham, Warwick, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Nottingham, Sheffield, Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Southampton, Lancaster and York. The rest are top universities in the European Union, Australia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, India and South America. ...and they all had a First Class degree, often within the top 10% of their year group.

I wonder have you decided where you will be applying in October 2025? Oxford? or Cambridge?

Oh you are looking for a "clear answer" in something as subjective as which half of Oxbridge is "best in uk for law"?

I don't think you are even cut for law, let alone something more intellectually demanding, i.e., STEM.

I did the Oxford BA followed by the BCL.

For undergrad, Oxford and Cambridge are on par with one another. I'd go with whichever course structure you prefer (in hindsight, I would probably have applied to Cambridge because Finals was extremely stressful).

For postgrad, you are correct that the Oxford BCL is more prestigious than the Cambridge LLM.

Do you remember your ranking in terms of your year group?

Choose based on modules and if you still don’t have a preference choose based on vibe or where you’d want to live- there is little difference

I was ranked equal 28th out of 209 candidates for the BA. Didn't ask for my BCL ranking.
