WJEC Sociology AS Unit 2

So today was the sociology Unit 1 exam, definitely not what people where expecting with two theory questions. I'm now wondering if they'll do the same in this upcoming exam with two factor-based essay questions?

How did you find it? I just waffled on the essay i felt like there wasnt enough time i didn't even get a minute to think. Also I think they might give one theory and then one on ethnicity, or class and achievement - i think gender came up last year so unlikely??

None of them were particularly hard for me, I had to think for a min on what to write for two reasons on the increase of people living alone but nothing was challenging for me. What about you?

I came from the exam quite happy, I had focused on revising theories however a lot of people I know decided to focus on contemporary society and leave out the theories and felt the same as you when I asked them. I had actually wondered about the possibility of two contemp/theory questions but decided that probably wouldn't happen. I was also very surprised to see functionalism come up again for the 4th time. I'm sorry the exam wasn't what you wanted but don't freak yourself out over it as a lot of people felt the same as you, and there is always the Unit 2 paper which I doubt will also feature 2 theories or 2 factor based-questions.

I did focus my revision on theories as they always come up i just feel like i had too much stuff that i wanted to talk about but didnt have time. i did the nuclear families being bad for women talked about rad fems and lib fems and parsons warm bath but didnt even have time to talk about marxist fems or post modernism etc.

I did that one too, I don't think it matters too much what type of feminists made the point you are stating. I didn't think I was going to have time for my Marxist feminist paragraph but I did so I just added it at the end under my conclusion as an "Additional paragraph." How much did you get done?

i managed to get it all done but i feel the structure was off- i was just trying to get all the relevant knowledge and evaluate as much as i could and yeah thats true tbf as long as you can back up your points for lib i said somerville- laws and policies in mod society mean women can negotiate equality but traditionally they don't have the power because less women were finanically independent so trad nuc families are bad but i said that modern ones were good?? dont even know if that counts as eval. i think i did about 4 main paragraphs.

I talked about somerville too, I also did Hakim, functionalism and postmodernists argument that the feminist view is too focused on white, middle-class women, which now thinking about it that really isn't an argument that the family is good for women. See now I'm kinda worried because I kinda just wrote paragraphs that the nuclear family was bad for women and for my counter argument was just what people said against the feminist theory.. I don't know if that was really an evaluation? We had just been told to see what theory they are referencing and then write their views on the family. Honestly don't stress it too much, sounds like you had some good stuff written down which tons of other people wont.

yeah i talked about hakim as well, im not thinking about that exam now just going to focus on the next- with eval read the past examiners reports they mention how if you just state the opposing view, its sometimes classed as juxtaposition unless you state why its a disadvantage or advantage of the original point.
so for education durkheim says it promotes social solidarity and collective conscience (example everyone learns the same curriculum). To evaluate i would say the disadvantage is that it's quite ethnocentric not everyone in school has the same values and so curriculum can isolate children and alienate them, and then maybe use althusser isa to back it up, that it teaches ruling class values (an example could be like the welsh knot, which alienated welsh children-outdated tho so could say Black children may feel isolated because lessons such as History teach British culture.

Oh no like two of my paragraphs could be classed as juxtaposition, surely they cant take marks off for that as it isn't incorrect just irrelevant? I know my A01 and A02 is full marks as all my points related to the actual topic, if my A03 isn't the best it wont be the end of the world as you can lose 15 marks in that exam and still come out with an A. I was honestly just not in my head for that exam I just wanted to get all my information down. I'm curious to see what the grade boundaries will be as everyone either hated it or loved it.

I wouldn't worry about it im sure itll be fine you probably did evaluate without realising, also im not sure if thats even the case just what i read on the examiners reports and they definitely won't take away any marks. Don't worry just try and focus on the next ones unit 1 is not even 25% im sure
