Digital Video Production and Marketing or Fashion Image Making and Styling?

After attending open days and researching all my possible courses, I have narrowed it down to these two courses for my firm choice at Salford University as I have a strong interest in photography, video editing, and fashion. However, I am unsure of what is the best choice in terms of finding employment in one of these fields after uni and whether the fashion image making and styling course is too niche?

Great that you've been attending open days and doing a lot of research into the degrees you're interested in - its the best way to make sure you're happy with your choice! I'd say either course will combine your interests in photography and video editing, but the Fashion Image Making and Styling (FIMS) course will do it through more of a fashion specific lens. I wouldn't say that its too niche of a degree in all honesty - within creative fields and jobs, its more about the skills you develop during your degree that you can then use in the workplace, and less about the actual degree name/title if that makes sense?

Just so you can see what I mean by that - for the FIMS course, you'd be picking up lots of skills in different areas. It does have more of a fashion publication and styling focus (skills within that being publication and development, image/publication structuring, promotion and marketing, casting, editing etc), but you'll also add in those video editing and directing skills too, so if you were looking to go into a more video specific fashion field afterwards (or wanted your options open to it) the course can give you those skills to take onwards. There are lots of jobs that would look for all of those skills that aren't even in the fashion fields - marketing and social media roles look for experience in those areas, and are both huge job markets. If you decided to go into more of the Digital Video Production side you could still build in some fashion content to the course as your projects are quite flexible in their themes, but you'd not find fashion-specific guidance/knowledge as a part of the course.

I'd say have a think about how important the fashion elements of the course are to you - is that the area you'd ideally like to go into after university? If so you might find FIMS might make that journey easier, but if you're less bothered about working within fashion digital video editing can give you similar, but more video/marketing oriented skills overall.

If you have any queries about the courses (or about university in general!) let me know, am happy to help 😊
All the best with your choices!
