Physics at university

So Im currently in lower sixth and I've decided I really want to do a physics degree. So far I've picked Lancaster, York and Newcastle uni and I'm not sure about my other 2 opinions but they will probably be Russel groups.
I'm studying Physics, Maths and 3D design. The 3D design is my problem as I'm not sure it's okay to apply to a academic degree with this. I am planning on taking AS further maths next year and I'm predicted A*AA with the A* being in the 3D design. Is there anything I should do, because I'm really set on these unis and I'm worried they'll look down on the 3D design.

I did Maths, Physics and Sociology and I’m currently at York. I think you’ll be fine.

Take a look at Durham. I think Unis require maths and physics but are fairly flexible with the 3rd A level. You can always contact their admissions to ask.

Since you're concerned about how your 3D design A* might be perceived, the best choice is to highlight its relevance to physics or showcase your interdisciplinary skills in your application.

Hi there,

It's great that you've already had a look at unis and have started picking some options! I would greatly recommend attending some open days between now and your UCAS deadline next Jan to consolidate your decisions - there are usually some in June/July and then more around October time

I've had a look at those three universities and this is what I found:

Lancaster

AAA requirements

Subject requirements of Physics (grade A) and Maths (grade A)

York

AAB requirements

Subject requirements of Physics (grade A) and Maths (grade A)

Newcastle

AAB requirements

Subject requirements of Physics and Maths (doesn't specify that both Phys and Maths need to be A grades)

As you can see, the only subject requirements are Physics and Maths, so universities would not pay much attention to what your third subject is, only what your predicted/achieved grade is for that subject! Please don't worry too much about it - if you are still feeling a bit anxious then I recommend following the advice above and talking in your personal statement about how studying 3D design might help you during your degree and make you a strong candidate

Hope this puts your mind at rest, and good luck!

Daughter was at Lancaster and you just need physics and maths and one other alevel. She’s graduated now but Lancaster was excellent for support, careers fairs and internships

Hello @Spaghettilegs

I'm glad to see that you are considering studying at Lancaster! As the LJMU Rep helpfully pointed out, the entry grades to study Physics at Lancaster are grades AAA, including a grade A in Mathematics and a grade A in Physics. From what I can see on our website there are no other grade requirements, meaning your third A-level option could be something like 3D Design if it was an A-level this would have to be a grade A or if your 3D Design course was a BTEC then this would have to be a Distinction grade.

I hope that clears up any questions regarding entry requirements, if you do have any more questions please feel free to contact [email protected] via email.
