Panicked - should I do a PGCE?

Hello, I have just lost my job a few weeks ago as an Animator in Technology (a really specific field) it's very niche, which was fun, but it means that I am not really qualified to work anywhere else.

I worked there in England for 1.5 years and now I am panicking and thinking I should apply for a PGCE. I would like to teach art, although there are no spaces to teach art in Northern Ireland.
And I would like to teach art in England, but I cannot afford the fees as I would need to apply through Student finance NI, which does not cover the loan to live in england.

I don';t know what to do, I am currently now applying for more animation jobs

I think I might also be slightly autistic, ( this is usually not held me back, but now life feels all too much)

I am having to move back in with my parents and feel like a failure, I do not want to be recognised by people i used to go to school with

There are only spaces left in the ICT PGCE, but I do not know any coding

Slow
Down.

These are big things and shouldn't be rushed. The questions should be (in this order):
Do I want to teach? Y/N
What do I want to teach?
Where do I want to teach?
Where can I afford to teach?

My recommendation would be to find a job for the next 12 months while doing a proper application for a PGCE - for the subject you want to do - with you having carefully considered it.

It sounds like you've also got some contemplating to do about the possibility of an autism diagnosis. Take some time for that.

You aren't a failure, you are wonderful and I am happy to help - but please don't rush this stuff.

Thank you for the feedback,

Yes I am definitely rushing it, there is also a lot of pressure from family as well, they are very traditional and keep reminding me that 'time is running out',

I would like to stay in the Animation Industry for many more years, and / or work with nature and animals.

In the future I would like to get a more stable government job (maybe 5 years from now)
And then I would like to teach Art or Animation, not ICT

I would love to teach in Europe, Ireland or somewhere further, (I have an Irish passport)

Right now I have no savings and have needed to continuously borrow money from my parents to pay rent (even though I am working full time and freelancing on the side)

So I don't want to put my family under any more financial pressure as well,

Since I started working this job in England, I have had emails and texts everyday from my family back in Ireland to quit my job and come back home,

Their reasoning for it is that I am unmarried, (as they are very traditional) and that a woman should not be living away from her parents unmarried,

Thank you for your advice, I just feel that I am running out of time,

Hi @04MR17 ,
I would suggest that you sign up for our teaching adviser service at Get into Teaching. All our advisers are experienced teachers and it is free. They will be able to help you work out if teaching is the right career for you, explain the funding and help you through the application process.
I would also suggest that you try to gain some school experience to ascertain if it is the right career path for you.

Good luck!

Laure

Thank you Laure,

Yes I have signed up for the English Teaching (Get into teaching) thing, and we have chatted on the phone for a while,

They are very helpful and we discussed that I may not be suited to ICT,
They suggested Design and Technology, but I don't really understand the electronics and maths

I know I'd enjoy and be good at Art, but all the uni spaces near me in england are closed for Art PGCE,
The closest ones are in Wales,

And I am not sure if I can study on the mainland anymore, as Student Finance NI does not provide enough funding to get me through the course,
