Housing

I am currently a first year at Newcastle University. I have spent the year in university accommodation. I was initially planning on commuting for my second year from Middlesbrough to save some money, but I've had a change of heart. I prefer to stay in a shared house since they are cheaper. Since it's late, all my friends have already secure their housing and I have no room. Is there any way I can find other people in simillar situations where they may be looking for a housemate?

Hi @tnsip

I hope you are well. Asking around is probably the best thing I could suggest when looking for a room in a house. Is there anyone on your course that you get along well with but perhaps don't see much of outside of university? They might be able to help you out. Also, Facebook can be quite useful for people looking for house mates. If you search your uni name and houses then something might pop up that is relevant!

It will take a stroke of luck but I am sure there will be something that can be arranged so that you can live in a house next year rather than commute. Always keep an eye out on here too, people often post about needing a new flat mate or house mate so hopefully something comes up for Newcastle.

I hope this response has helped slightly, let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help! Good luck!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hello @tnsip

As the previous reply stated, asking around and social media can really help to find somewhere to live, also, you could post here, but in the accommodation or Newcastle University forums so that your post targets the right people, I've seen quite a few posts making a similar enquiry, but for different universities, so you are definitely not alone.

I would also try enquiring with the university accommodation team. They will know what sorts of accommodation is available and how to go about finding it. There are often quite a large number of private landlords who rent out student accommodation and may do it on a room by room basis. Obviously the disadvantage of this is that you will not have a choice about who you live with and probably won't even know your housemates until you meet each other in the house for the first time, but the advantage is that it is a room.

If the university accommodation department can't help, I would ask for their recommendations about who to approach that can help you, in terms of student lettings agencies. Be careful about who you entrust with your money - I'm probably very cynical but there might be lots of unscrupulous people who will overcharge you etc. But if you make lots of enquiries, you will soon find the right house I'm certain.

I hope this helps, good luck with your house hunt and your second year,

Hi there,

I would just say the same as everyone else really - have a look on Facebook as this is usually a good place to find people. I know a couple of people who have done this before and it worked really well. People will often advertise rooms as some people end up dropping out or moving houses so this does happen. Usually people will message you and you can meet/have a chat before committing!

Looking on specific Newcastle pages will help too as this is where people will post - sometimes there are separate housing chats or groups where people often advertise rooms like this so it is worth a look!

Sometimes on websites like uni homes they will advertise one room in a shared house so it is worth going on here and filtering results to one bedroom houses as some may come up.

Ask your accommodation team too as they may help you to find somewhere.

Asking your student union may help too as they may be able to get you in contact with people too.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂
