Societies at university

If i have around 10 contact hours a week how many societies do you think I could join?

Hi there!

This is a great question! When I was in my first year I had 12 contact hours and I was in a sport team and a society. I trained twice a week for my sports team and my society met once a week and I still found that I had plenty of time to do coursework as well as hang out with my friends. I only dropped to my sports team in my third year as I had more work to do outside of classes and found I didn't have the time to do both.

How many you join is completely up to you and how much work you should be doing outside of classes. You can always join more/drop out of some during the year.

I hope this helps!

Hi Anon!

In my case I found societies were limited less by the contact hours I had and more by the times they met up. For example, my flatmate joined both the film society and tennis society but both ran on a Friday night; she'd just choose which one to attend based on whether she wanted to watch the film or not haha. Usually societies will meet once or twice a week, and they may have the odd event out of routine, like a night out or a day trip. One is usually enough for most, but I know a lot of people who manage joining both a sport and a social society. Generally I've never known anyone to manage more than 3 as the commitments become quite time-consuming!

You can always join a society but skip a session or two if you're needing to catch up on coursework or if you have something due in, for example. A lot of people do it and it'd be totally understandable. It all depends on your priorities!

I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you join!

Hi there!

I would echo what others have said really - that it really depends when the societies meet.

I would say that a sports team usually meet 2/3 times a week, depending on the level you are playing at and how competitive it is. You would then probably have time for another one which meets around once a week if you wanted to!

However, if you don't want to join a sports team/a society as competitive as this, you could join a couple which meet once a week. Some even meet once every fortnight or once a month even but you still get to meet the same amount of people by joining them.

The best thing to do is to go to the freshers fair when you start and talk to any society that you are interested in. They will be able to tell you how many times a week they meet, what days they meet etc and this is how you will get a better idea of what you will be able to do.

Societies are great ways of making friends and meeting new people so I would suggest joining them! They are great and you can always join more as the year goes on. Some are free too so you can join without worrying about money.

I hope some of this helps,

Hi there,

As others have said, it will depend on the society. Most people I know are only a part of one or two, as anymore can get quite overwhelming!

Definitely attend the sports and societies fair to chat with those that you are interested in, as this will give you a much better idea of how you may be able to manage multiple commitments.

I also just wanted to mention that you should also consider the independent work you are expected to do outside of contact hours. Are you also interested in part-time work, joining other clubs, or volunteering? How much free time do you want to have? I'm sure you can always drop or join societies throughout the year, but these are just some things to consider.

I hope this helps,

Hey there 😃

You’ll definitely have time to join a few societies! 🎭🎨⚽ The key is to consider your study habits and your university timetable.

First, think about how much time you usually need for independent study. Some people need more time to go over lecture material and work on assignments, while others are quicker and more efficient. Be realistic about your own needs and plan your study time around your contact hours and society activities.

Second, try not to sign up for too many societies right away, especially before you know your class timetable. Sometimes events or meetings can overlap with lectures or with each other. But most of the time, it’s totally manageable! As long as you’re attending your classes and keeping up with your studies, feel free to explore as many societies as you’re interested in.

It’s great that you want to get involved! You’ll naturally figure out which societies you enjoy most, and it’s completely okay to drop the ones that don’t suit you. Just follow your interests and have fun discovering what fits you best! 💫🙌

I hope it will be helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

Hi There!
This is a great question! When I was in my first year, I joined four societies (Quiz, Debate, Film, and Musical Theatre) and they were great fun and great to get to know more people and make friends at university.
As I reached my second year, I only stuck with the Musical Theatre society as I found I had made close friends through the other societies, so I decided to spend more of my time hanging out with them rather than going to all the different societies.
Now I'm in the Musical Theatre and the Doctor Who society- so I have societies twice a week and the rest of the time I can do uni work or hang out with friends.
It's up to you how much time you want to invest in clubs and societies. I was very socially awkward in my first year, so I loved going to all the different societies as it gave me a chance to be social and meet lots of people with different interests, but as the university workload gets bigger and you make more friends you'll probably find that you attend clubs and societies less and less (like how I started with 4, went down to 1, and now back up to 2).
Basically it is possible to do up to around 4 societies, I feel that anymore than that would be overwhelming for me, but you'd just have to judge it based on yourself and how much free time you have.

I hope this helps

Hi there,

I have had between 9-12 contact hours last year, and was a member of 2 societies. However, I really feel like I could join more - but those two were the only ones I was interested in.

I hope that helps,
