Studying for higher human biology (SQA)

The final exam is on the 27th and I have no idea how to study effectively to ensure that I know all the knowledge. I feel quite overwhelmed with the volume of content and I don’t know how to overcome that fear.

I also struggle with having the right exam technique in tests even if I know all the content which loses me quite a lot of markers. It’s the same with the math problem solving question, math has always been my strong suit but those questions still stump me .

So if anyone has any advice and study techniques it’d be much appreciated. I think it’s also important to share I’m really aiming for an A to get into medicine but I also wanna strive to get an A1 which I know I can do if I study effectively 😭

The best way is to break things down into chunks and take it one step at a time rather than one big lump load of content. Perhaps split into units and do a mindmap with what you remember first and add what you dont in a different colour. You can also do the approach of attempting questions head first as I learn better by just doing questions and making mistakes to learn from. People who are good at maths can definitely still struggle with maths in biology as it isn't like the set methods you're used to in maths. I'd suggest underlining key information in the question and using units to see what's happening. For example, if you have m/s2 and Km and they want something in s we know that this m and Km need to be taken out so we would convert Km to m and then divide m/s2 by the converted m. If you struggle thats the best thing, work with units! Also perhaps look at the questions more in terms of understanding whats happening with the numbers rather than what do I do with these if that makes sense. I'm sure with practice and some motivation you will do fine in the actual thing. Stay positive! you got this

Hi! I got an A in Higher human biology last year and I am a med applicant who got 4/4 offers, I’d say for biology that blurting really helps! Get a bit of paper or a whiteboard, pick a topic and write everything you can remember (try and use strict SQA wording) and then fill in the gaps/areas with weaker wording with a different colour so you know your weak areas within topics. Then I’d suggest doing targeted PPQs so you can work on wording, there are usually hyperlinked documents online, alongside full papers to strengthen the weaker areas. Finally is suggest you do the Feynman technique, which will also be handy in med school, where you teach a parent or a friend or even stuffed toy the course content, if you can teach it in simple terms then you know it properly. I did all of these last year and they helped me know the course content inside out and helped with language.

Good luck!

Thank you so much😭. I really was really worried I wouldn’t have enough time to revise cause I also have my Business exam a couple days before Bio which are both content heavy topics but hopefully I’ll be fine

Honestly I’ve had to spend a lot of time studying for my business exam tomorrow but for bio it’s actually been pretty well in terms of the stuff I have done

I’ve found mind mapping insanely useful which genuinely has allowed me to absorb information like a sponge in a short period of time. I watched Justin Sung on YouTube and he explains how to make mind maps effective and stay in ur long term memory. The brief overview of his video was to basically make the mind map in terms of how each word or process in a specific key area link together and drawing arrows to show their connection. This helps you with the questions where u have to link certain parts of the key area together, problem solve and overall gives u a better understanding of the topic. After this I do past papers question solely on that key area then after this Feynman technique to ensure u fully know the topic inside out

Do you know anyone that does higher environmental science? I'm doing it this year and its honestly so bad. (Never should have taken it ughjjhhh) I'm struggling to do a past paper on it, it's just so much work. If so, would you please be able to ask how they revise for it as there's just so much to remember?😭😭😭

I also struggle with having the right exam technique in tests even if I know all the content which loses me quite a lot of markers. It’s the same with the math problem solving question, math has always been my strong suit but those questions still stump me .
So if anyone has any advice and study techniques it’d be much appreciated. I think it’s also important to share I’m really aiming for an A to get into medicine but I also wanna strive to get an A1 which I know I can do if I study effectively 😭

random but have any ideas on what the 8-10 marker might be on

Hey i do all 3 sqa higher sciences (chemistry, human biology, physic) and math, computing. i am really looking for 4 study buddies at each subject. Please can anyone help me and reach out to me. I need 4 study buddy for each subject and my plan is to use group learning strategy on google classroom. My plan is we can use this strategy to improve learning. I am begging for someone to reach me out. This apply to all my subject. A person that does some of the same subject i do can also be my group study buddy for multiple subject.

flashcard in boxes. study 3 topic at 1 topic from each unit. this interleaving process will increase your chance of getting grade A
