Funding for HND (STEM) if I already have a BSc/MSc

Hi all,

I'd appreciate some clarification if possible. I have a BSc that I completed some years ago and a 1-year MSc that I did three years ago. A university not far from me offers a part-time HND in electrical engineering that is delivered online over 2 years (although you can take longer if you wish) at a tuition cost of around £3900 for the first half of it, and then the same amount for the rest of the modules to take it up to a HND. As I understand it, because it is in a STEM subject and because the course is part-time, I would be eligible for a loan to cover the tuition fee, but not for a maintenance loan. Is this correct?

I studied BDS (dentistry) from 2013 to 2018, with 4 years of SFE undergrad funding (5th year was paid by the NHS) and I left with a BSc exit degree (I was unable to complete the BDS course). I hold an MSc in computer science which I did for one year full-time from 2022-2023, for which I received a Postgraduate loan for tuition, etc.

The course I would like to apply for a loan to fund the tuition for is a HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This is a part-time, distance learning course. I know that I would not be eligible for any maintenance, it's just the tuition I would be applying for.

The link to the course for further information is:

Many thanks in advance to anyone who answers!

Hi there, unfortunately we are unable to open links, so if possible could you answer the following questions please:
The university you will be applying to?
The exact course title?
When are you planning to start your studies?
Thank you, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,
It is Teesside University and the course title is "Electric and Electronic Engineering by Flexible Open Learning HND". The course starts “monthly” as it is all by distance learning so I would look to start ASAP, which would be June I would think.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi there, Is this the course you are looking to start:

Study Mode: Part-time - Undergraduate
Course name: ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING: TUOLE
Qualification: Higher National Diploma (HND)
Duration: 2 Years full-time equivalent duration
Distance Learning course
Tuition Fees: £4500
June intake
SLC Course Code: 683470

if you are unsure, you can check this course information with the university and they can confirm this for you. Thanks, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

Yes that is the course.

Many thanks,

Hi Tom, to qualify as an exception the course must be one of the following levels:

*part time honours degree
*joint honours degree
*integrated masters degree

Then you would be fine to apply for this course and receive tuition fee loan. Thanks, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,
As it is an HND I'm pretty sure that it is essentially the first two years of the honours degree equivalent, just done on a part-time basis? I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "levels"? It is degree-level study as far as I can see? If it is part-time and is a STEM course, I thought previous study was disregarded?

Many thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom, I think the confusion arises as the course is a HND and not a part time honours degree / joint honours degree or integrated masters degree. You could still submit the application and we will be able to verify if this course is a valid exemption course, this will however require to be validated by the assessment team. Thanks Stephen.
