edexcel math's mark scheme

What does it mean if the answer was between brackets, and is it essential to get the mark?

Its obviously defining the random variable R, but is optional for the mark. As the question asks for a suitable distribution to model the number of red beads, you get the mark for just stating the binomial distribution B(18,0.14). But its good practice to write something like
X ~ distrbution
and if X isnt defined the question, do so.
