Second degree funding

Hello, I'm thinking of studying a second degree in biology. Possible one with either a foundation year or an integrated masters, depending on if I'm eligible. I was wondering if I could get funding and if so how much? It says limited funding may be available is that tuition fees and some maintenance loan or some years of tuition fees may be covered? Thinking of studying part time.

Hi Sophie, please confirm the following information:
The university you will be applying to?
The exact course title?
How many years is the course in total?
How many years of previous study do you have?
When are you planning to start your studies?
Thank you, Stephen.

thinking of applying to either the university of sheffield or the university of nottingham
uni off sheffield: biological sciences BSC or biological sciences with foundation year bsc
uni off nottingam: biology bsc (I think both courses are with honors)
with foundation year: 4 years, without 3 years full time, can't find what it is for part time
I have 3 years of a completed BA (hon) degree and 1 year of a masters degree
planning to start my studies september 2026

Hi Sophie, if this is for Sept 2026, I would advise to check this again after the 26/27 academic year launch (as the information is always subject to change, but for purposes of your query, I will check this against the current 25/26 academic year information:

University Of Sheffield, Biological Sciences, Full time courses only - No part time options
University Of Nottingham, Biology BSc, Full time courses only - No part time options

As it stands if you applied for the full time options of these courses, then your support would be blocked as you have already gained and equivalent or higher qualification than the one you would be applying for.

However under the part time exemption criteria, if these courses were available to study and were either: part time honours degree, joint honours degree or integrated masters degree.then support may be available. At present, these universities are not running the part time option for the 25/26 academic year, so you may want to can check for alternatives, but it would be best to wait until nearer the new academic year launch (26/27) to see if these have been updated or not. Thanks, Stephen.

hello the university of bath and the university of gloucestershire seem to have a part time course:
course name: biology bsc
if I were to choose one of these courses what funding would be available? ie, tuition fees and maintenance loan

Hi Sophie, at present University of Bath are offering no Undergraduate Part Time courses, however University of Gloucestershire have this:

Study Mode: Part-time
Course name: Biology
Qualification: Bachelor Degree with Honours
Duration: 3 Years full-time equivalent duration
Sept Intake 25/26
Ok for Part Time Exemption.
But again, would advise to check this information again once the new 26/27 academic year undergraduate applications have launched, usually around March 2026. Thanks, Stephen.

okay, what is funding usually like for this kind of part time degree? Do you think you could give me an estimate on what I could expect? Like for example if I was going to take it during the 25/26 year. Would funding cover the whole course for example.

It's just so I know whether or not to start an application.

Hi Sophie. For this course you would be eligible for Tuition Fee and the Maintenance Loan. The Tuition Fee should cover the full amount charged by your University. We cannot answer exactly how much Maintenance Loan you will receive as this is based on your application details, course, living location etc. Thanks, David
