Resit

My module is split into 30% coursework and 70% exam. I get 58 on the coursework and got 35 on the exam which is a fail but my overall module mark is 42 which is a pass. Will I have to resit the exam? Uni of Leicester law : land. It doesn’t tell me in the handbooks

Hey,

That’s a great question and one a lot of students end up wondering about when modules are split like that.

If your overall mark for the module is 42%, and the pass mark is 40%, then you’ve technically passed the module overall. That usually means you wouldn't have to resit the exam, even if you failed that specific component. Many universities focus on the overall module grade, unless the module explicitly states that you need to pass each component separately to pass the module as a whole.

That said, some modules do require a minimum mark in the exam component specifically, regardless of the overall grade. If this is the case, it should be mentioned either in your module handbook or on your course’s Blackboard or moodle page. If it's not clear, your best bet is to email your module leader or academic support team directly, they’ll be able to confirm whether there’s a hurdle requirement for the exam.

At the University of Salford, students are encouraged to speak with their personal tutor or student support services in these situations, just to be safe and avoid surprises later. If Leicester offers something similar (and most unis do), it might be worth reaching out to them too.

But from what you’ve described, unless there’s a specific rule about needing to pass each component, you should be in the clear. Definitely double-check to ease your mind, and well done for passing the module overall!

Good luck 😊
