Should I go to Uni of Salford or Man Met?

I am currently in a gap year and last minute decided that I would like to go to uni in September 2025. I knew I would like to do film and be in Manchester. After a lot of thought I decided I wanted to go to either Manchester Met or Salford. Each uni offered a film course - Man Met (Filmmaking), Salford (Film production). I was accepted into the course by Salford, however I originally applied to a different course at Met and as I left it so late I couldn't change the course.

While I haven't been able to attend either Uni for an open day, I would prefer to go to Manchester Met as life in general does seem better (sport, area, accommodation, social etc). However, the course at Salford overall seems to edge Met, as well as the course at Met being different.

I have multiple questions:
If I went to Met would I be able to change course as soon as I got there?
As I left it so late will I still have a chance of getting my top accommodation?
What is the sport like at Salford?
And overall which Uni would you pick?

Thanks

Hi!
I would call Met and ask about this exact thing - I'm sure staff there would be able to give you an answer. I know some universities allow a transfer, but I imagine each university handles things differently so your best bet would be to get a direct answer.
Universities generally allow those who applied before clearing to get first dibs on accomodation, so it's likely you'd be getting what's left. This is something you can also call and ask about.
I can't help you with the last two questions unfortunately, but I'm sure that which ever course you go for, you will enjoy it. Good luck in uni!

The course should be your key consideration. There's not point studying a course you are not keen on.

@University of Salford - can you advise on the sport?

Hello Damom,

Firstly you have some really good questions here and it is really good that you are debating so much when coming up with the decision of what institution you want to attend. You seemed to have done as much research on the course as possible but if you do want to read over the details more do have a read of our course page here.

Unfortunately I would not be able to advise you on the first question as each institution is different with their policy on changing courses while attending the university. I would recommend calling their course enquiries team and asking this question directly to them.

I am not sure if you are referring to your top accomodation at Salford or at Met, but either way I would again recommend getting in touch with either our or their enquiries teams as they would have the most up to date information. You can email our course enquiries teams it would be [email protected] they take up to five days to respond to any email. You can also give them a call on 0161 295 4545 between the hours of 10am and 4pm, Monday - Friday.

For the sport question, we have a range of sports teams all available to join from first year onwards, the full list of sports teams we have can be found on our student union website. We do have competitive games with other institutions including Manchester Met, but our main "rival" and institution we do varsity with is Chester.

Overall, I would say the best person to answer your final question is you. I know this may not be very helpful but only you know deep down what would be the best option for you. My advice would be to follow your gut instinct and to pick the institution that you think would be best for you. You are considering all the right areas, it is just now about weighing up what is more/ less important to you.

I do hope my post helps you come to a decision and best of luck with this.

have you looked at a uni called futureworks?
Salford is a great university.

Never start a course hoping to switch to a different course. This isn’t a sneaky backdoor option - universities will prevent students who try to do this to bypass the fair admissions process.

I would also personally avoid private providers who make profits from student fees like BIMM and futureworks. They won’t offer the student experience that you are looking for in any way and are much better suited to masters study alongside work.

Hi @Damom Mackenzie

It is super hard to make these choices espeically when the universities are in the same city.

Both universities have great connections to different media outlets throughout the city such as Media City jsut down the road from Salford with the BBC and itv, partnerships with cinema houses, and more.

Here at Manchester Met, we do offer the course with either a placement or study abroad year making your course 4 years rather than 3. If you want to take a placement year, you will spend at least 36 weeks working within an organisation in the industry, developing workplace skills, practical understanding and genuine industry experience.

In terms of changing courses, if you did start with us in September and decided you were on the wrong course you could contact our Student Hub and apply for an internal transfer, however, this is dependant on if the course you want to move to has availability and the tutors decide the course is suitable for you. Usually, this needs to be done within the first couple of weeks of starting the course.

If you wanted to change universities, this usually isn't possible when courses have started but you would need to check with Salford on their policy.

if you've got any specific questions just let us know! Good luck with making your choice, I know it can be really hard but follow your gut instinct. If you can make it to an open day before you decide it would be really beneficial for you! Our next one is the 18th June.

Carly 🙂
