Civil Engineering

I am currently in year 12 studying maths further maths and physics. I am interested in studying Civil Engineering at Univeristy. Is the degree worth it? I am currently considering Bristol, Warwick, Sheffield, Loughborough, and Bath or Exeter. Do you think these are good options bare in mind I don’t want to go to London so Imperial is out of the picture:

Hi N1kk128, 👋

It's great to hear you are interested in studying Civil Engineering at the University of Sheffield!

My partner did his engineering degree at Sheffield and loved it. He said the staff were always so supportive and the resources were second to none. For instance, the building called The Diamond was specially designed for the engineering faculty! 😄

The civil engineering BEng can be tailored to you too. By studying at BEng level, you have the option to graduate, continue your education with an MSc, or (subject to performance) change to an MEng programme after year two. 👏

This degree is also accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng)!

Please let me know if there is anything else you'd like to know about the course, or about studying/living in Sheffield. I've done my BA, MA here and now I'm back for my PhD because I love studying at the University of Sheffield. 😃

All best wishes (and good luck with your A-levels!),
Phoebe 👋

Hi!

While I do not take Engineering myself, I have several friends that have and enjoying it!

I am not sure if you have had a look at websites offering the courses yet, but if you would like to know more information about the types of modules you can take and the career pathways you can have from this, you can check out our website at:
University of Sheffield - Civil Engineering

We were recently ranked 5th in the UK for Civil Engineering, but if ranking does not matter to you, our facilities are also a great working environment to get hands-on experience. We have the iForge, which is a makerspace area with tools like 3D printer, laser cutter, bandsaws etc, where you are able to drop in and use these tools. We also have lots of student led societies, where you can join a team that is designing drones or prosthetics even a racing car. You can find out more information here:
Student Led Societies

As you are in y12 and do not have to make an immediate decision, I would recommend going to open days so you can speak to lecturers and current students to find out more information.

Hope that helps and let me know if you have questions about Civil Engineering at Sheffield or just general student life!
