a level choices

hello! currently a y11 I was wondering if my a level subjects are somewhat helpful for pursuing law (in uni etc):
- biology, geography, sociology/psychology (picked different subjects for some schools)
are these unusual, would I be disadvantaged? I heard a level subjects dont matter THAT much for law but I'm not really sure. they're kind of essay based subjects (besides bio) but idk are they not very relevant? thank you!

Hello, Sociology would be really relevant! Most schools do a whole section for Crime and Deviance, and have some subtopics where you get to learn a brief overview of some relevant laws and policies. Overall, a-level subjects shouldn't matter tooooo much as long as its somewhat related. Universities don't tend to be picky with what subjects you chose but rather how well you performed on them.

It also depends on the uni - very few may require certain subjects, but this is usually not the case. I believe your subject choices are great for pursuing Law, and also leave you a wide variety of options in case you ever decide to change your mind.

There are no required subjects for Law - you just need 3 good grades.

Most people find an essay-based subject useful for skills but it is not essential. It makes sense to take 3 subjects that you will enjoy studying, and therefore where you are more likely to get good grades.

Both Psychology or Sociology are solid essay-based subjects, and Geography has the advantage that many Unis see it as both a Humanities subject and as a 'science related subject'. These subjects would leave lots of other doors open to you if you eventually decided on a different degree subject other than Law,

Hi there!

Biology, Geography and Sociology or Psychology sound like good choices if you're interested in pursuing Law.

Universities are looking for an interest in Law most importantly so that will come from reading and learning about Law outside of lessons. As they aren't looking for any particular subjects, Sociology/Psychology are great for showing an interest as there are quite a few links to Law in studying society or individuals which will really help with your experience. Geography is great for showing your ability to write essays which is important for Law and Biology shows a range of knowledge.

It sounds like you're picking a good variety which hopefully you will enjoy studying at A Level and they will help with your application for university!

Hi there,

Most universities don’t require specific A-Level subjects for Law. What matters most is meeting the entry requirements and achieving strong grades in the subjects you enjoy and perform well in.

While your choices may not all be directly linked to Law, subjects like Sociology and Geography develop critical thinking and essay writing skills both valuable for a Law degree. Even Biology can show your ability to engage with complex information and think analytically.

To strengthen your application, consider highlighting any relevant themes or skills from your subjects in your personal statement. You might also explore some wider reading or take a free short online course (like a MOOC) related to Law to demonstrate your interest and initiative.

Hope that helps, and best of luck with your studies! 🙂

alright thank you for the help, definitely tried to pick subjects I enjoyed as well (hence the biology) and ones I was sort of familiar with (I do sociology at gcse level) - would you say psychology is more/less difficult than you had expected? how similar is it to sociology, if you are familiar with it too? thank you!!

Check the 'entry requirements' for each subject that sounds interesting/intriguing - everything from Anthropology or American Studies to Philosophy or International Relations are possible..
Undergraduate Courses, Degrees : Study : University of Sussex
Subject Areas | Undergraduate | Newcastle University
Etc

There are no specific subject requirements for law. Just the good grades (whichever grades it is they require).
Essay subjects may be useful. So sociology would deffo be useful. And geography has essay elements to it as well.

It sounds like you've made a great choice and it's really good you've picked subjects you enjoy!

I have not studied Sociology before but I know there are crossovers with Psychology. Psychology was a really enjoyable A Level and I did study it at GCSE so already had an understanding of the subject but it definitely wasn't required. I would say it was about as difficult as I expected it to be Be prepared for the research methods section as it involves maths and I know some people aren't expecting it so it takes them by surprise. I would definitely recommend studying it as an A level as it is really interesting but have a look at your options and pick whatever is best for you!!

Hope this helps!

Your subjects seem good. I'd look into the LNAT (https://lnat.ac.uk/) assuming you're considering top universities. There's no specific A-Levels you need to do well on it, and law applicants seem to treat it like it's the deciding factor for whether they get in or not, so it probably is somewhat. Having a strong grasp on (law-related) English language probably helps but the A-Level isn't necessary.

alright thanks so much! I've heard about the LNAT (heard it's really important..??) but I'll definitely need to look it up more, thanks again for the advice!

Hi, these sound like great options for law. What's important is that they are rigorous subjects, for instance, doing textiles or a more practical subject may not be viewed as rigorous as others. Yes, I agree that you need good grades in all (but that doesn't mean to pick 'easier' subjects) to ensure that you are able to apply to a wide ranges of universities (because, as I'm sure already know, law is extremely competitive. If you pick a wide range of subjects (like the ones you've mentioned), you will show that you have a wide variety of skills (both essay-based and science skills). Don't worry about picking law as an A-Level subject (if it's even an option) as most universities like having you as a clean slate so they can completely teach you the Law content without you having any bad habits from previous teaching.

thanks for the help- that's very interesting/ unexpected that they prefer having us on a clean slate! I am well aware of how competitive it is (hence my concern abt a levels) but its great to know that my subjects are still suitable, thank you!

I know you've had loads of helpful responses but defo not at a disadvantage!! Universities dont really care but prefer at least one essay subject for law. I do Environmental science (similar to geography in a few aspects), sociology and law! I absolutely love all my subjects and I wouldn't change them if I went back in time. Do what you find interesting and enjoy 🩷🤞
