Advice Needed on Changing Course and Student Finance Implications

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in my first year of an undergraduate degree, but over time, I’ve come to the realization that the course isn’t the right fit for me. After much consideration, I’ve applied to a different university for a course that aligns more with my interests and have been offered a place.

My question is: Do I need to complete my current first-year exams and assignments in order to be eligible for student finance for the new course? Or is it acceptable to withdraw before completing the year without it affecting my funding for the new course?

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences from those who’ve been in a similar situation.

Thanks in advance!

If you leave before August, you will still be able to apply for finance for your new course but you would be required to make a pro-rata repayment of your third maintenance loan instalment. Your maintenance loan covers you through the summer holidays so if, for example, you leave at the end of May, you would repay the amount received for June-August.

If you continue with your course and withdraw late August, you would apply for student finance as a continuing student but with your new course and uni.

Are passing your exams at your current uni a condition of your new offer?
If you leave before the end of the year then you need to apply for next year as a new student (and won’t be funded for the summer). If you’ve already applied for funding for next year as a continuing student you would need to cancel that application and start again.

If you complete the year then you apply as a continuing student with a change to course/university and your funding would cover the summer.

Passing exams isn't a condition on my new offer. Thanks for your response.
