need serious advice on what to do, I want to study diagnostic radiography this yr

I am currently a first year at university studying computer science at city university of London. To be honest I chose this subject on a whim as I had no clue what I wanted to do and have come to hate it.

I know exactly what I want to do now which is diagnostic radiography, but I’ve realised too late. I tried to transfer courses but radiography doesn’t allow transfers, also applications for the course are now closed so I can’t apply for it directly either. I have no clue what to do, I know one option is applying through clearing to city or London south bank but that is subject to availability of the course on the day, and last year both universities did not have diagnostic radiography as course option for clearing.

Also, I have no clue how the clearing process works now that I am not in sixth form anymore, do I need to create a new ucas account, or can I use my old one. And also is it even possible to do it as I am a student studying computer science right now, do I need to drop out of computer science first? (I’m not sure if I am willing to take such a big risk, because what if everything else fails and in the end I’m left with nothing)

Also, since it is subject to availability, if I don’t get in through clearing, I have no options left and so do I have to apply for uni again but for 2026 entry? I really don’t want it to come to that, as I have already wasted a whole year doing computer science, I can’t afford to waste another (my parents would genuinely kill me), I know it’s my fault that I realised this late I don’t want to do computer science anymore and what I really want to do is diagnostic radiography, but I’m just genuinely so lost right now, everyone I have emailed and asked advice from has been no help, so really any genuine advice on what I can do right now would be so immensely appreciated.

I was in the same situation last year and decided to take a gap year but not for diagnostic radiography. For clearing I think u can use ur same ucas account from last year and call up universities on clearing. There are usually some unis on clearing for diagnostic however due to the competitiveness this year I highly doubt city and LSBU would be. But if u don’t mind relocating im pretty sure there will be some unis available at the moment. Also clearing opens on 4th of July so call unis up on that day before u withdrew from ur current course. Best of luck xx

You can apply now using the same account but with a new application for 2025 entry. This would give you the full five choices although most (if not all) DR courses will now be closed to applications as it is a popular course. You would still need to start a new application to be ready for clearing. You don't need to drop out of your current course to do this.

Be aware that even in clearing you will be interviewed for a healthcare course. Do you have any shadowing experience in a radiography department and public facing work/volunteering experience? Unis want to see these on your application to show that you understand the role and can deal with the general public.

It's not a waste of a year if DR is really where you see your future and you need to apply for 2026 entry. You could get a job in a care home, retail, etc., to give you valuable experience and to boost your application. Your are an adult now and your parents need to understand that it is your future and this is what you need to do to get there.

Hi,
First, I want to say that you're incredibly brave for being honest with yourself and reaching out for support. It's not easy to realise that the course you're currently in isn't right for you, especially when you feel like time is slipping away. But let me reassure you, you are not alone in this, and it’s not too late to make a change.

🔄 Clearing: Your Immediate Option
Clearing opens on July 5th, and you're right that radiography places are limited, but here's what you can do:

You don’t need to withdraw from your current course just yet.

When clearing opens, call the universities you’re interested in (such as City or London South Bank). Ask them directly if they have spaces for Diagnostic Radiography.

They’ll let you know on the phone whether they are considering applicants. If a place is available and you're eligible, they might give you an informal offer.

Only withdraw from Computer Science if you’ve confirmed a new offer this way, you're not left without any options.

💸 Finances & Student Loan Considerations
It's important to think about the financial side too:

If you're self-funding, think carefully about whether you're willing to give up that year of tuition and the cost you've already paid.

If you’re getting Student Finance, keep in mind that the government usually funds only your first degree plus one additional year, which they call a “gift year”.

Since you’ve used one year, you might only get partial funding unless you successfully appeal your case (which is possible, especially for health-related courses).

So, weigh up whether you're financially ready to make the switch now or whether taking a year out might be the more secure option.

If Clearing Doesn’t Work: Gap Year with Purpose
If you don’t get a spot through Clearing this year, don’t panic; it doesn’t mean the end of your dream.

You could take a gap year, work, gain healthcare-related experience, and earn money while preparing your application for 2026 entry.

Use this time to research the profession, volunteer or work in a hospital or clinic, and build a strong personal statement.

When applying again through UCAS (by October 2025 for healthcare courses), make sure your:

A personal statement clearly explains your passion for radiography and what changed for you.

References are strong and ideally related to healthcare or academic strengths.

You meet the entry requirements: Grade 4/C or above in GCSE Maths and English, plus either A-levels or BTEC with around 120 UCAS points, including a science (maybe if you don’t have experience).

💬 Final Advice From Someone Who’s Been There
I understand where you're coming from. I’ve been in a similar place myself. Feeling stuck, confused, and afraid of disappointing your family is overwhelming. But here’s what I’ve learned:
Doing something that doesn’t make you happy is not sustainable, and your future deserves better than that.
If you follow what truly drives you and plan your steps carefully, you’ll be surprised by how much support you can find along the way. Speak honestly with your parents and let them know that you're not giving up, you’re realigning to something that genuinely inspires you.
You’re not behind; you’re building your future with intention now.
You will make the right decision; trust yourself.
Whatever you need, you're not alone in this.
Warm regards,

Hey, I’m really glad you reached out, it sounds like you’re going through a lot right now, and honestly, you’re not alone in feeling this way. Many students realise partway through that their current course isn’t the right fit, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

I’m currently studying Engineering at City St George’s, University of London, and while it’s not the same path, I’ve seen others go through similar changes. First off it’s a good thing you’ve figured out what you actually want to do, and Diagnostic Radiography is a strong, vocational degree with a clear career path.

Here are a few things that might help:

Try speaking with your course tutor or course officer since you’re already a City student, they may be able to give you tailored advice or even flag options you haven’t considered. It’s worth asking even if transfers aren’t usually allowed.

For Clearing, you can use your existing UCAS account, just update it to enter Clearing when the time comes.

You don’t need to drop out yet you can apply through Clearing first and only make any changes once you have a confirmed offer, so you’re not risking your current place unnecessarily.

It’s true Radiography is competitive, but it’s still worth registering interest with City and LSBU so you’re notified if it becomes available.

If Clearing doesn’t work out, you’d be applying for 2025 entry (not 2026), and you could use the year to build relevant experience which would make your next application even stronger.

I know this all feels stressful right now, but there are still paths forward. You’ve taken the first big step by reaching out and being clear about what you want that’s not a small thing. If you want any help with understanding Clearing or preparing next steps, I’m happy to help however I can! 😊

Just to clarify a few points:

You do not need to wait for clearing to open. You can apply now with a new application for the 2025 cycle with the full five choices if the DR courses are still open to applications. It's not just a case of 'just updating your application to enter clearing' as you don't currently have an application for 2025 entry. You will need a reference from your current uni and a new personal statement for DR.

As DR is classed as an exception course by SFE, you would be eligible to apply for tuition fee and maintenance loans for the duration of the course irrespective of your previous study.
