Autism and university

So I’m in y13 and am currently sitting my a levels i have a university place and have made my firm choice, I’m excited to go however I am struggling to come to terms with the thought of leaving as I am autistic and struggle massively with change and this is possibly one you the biggest life changes that I’m going through and I was wondering if there were any other autistic university students who struggled with the same thing and if so how did you cope

Also not a uni student but I am in exactly the same position as you! Here's some things I have heard from unis and students:

Some unis have an early arrival day for autistic students so you can feel more comfortable settling in, so you might want to check if your uni has that

Most unis have lots of support for people who are struggling with homesickness

You can always ask disability support if you ever need any help

You will (eventually) find your group of people - for some reason neurodiverse people seem to attract one another so the probability of finding a neurodiverse friend group is high

If you can, get the DSA (disabled student allowance). This is super helpful if you need any equipment for your studies and (I got told this from a friend so don't quote me) it might be possible to pay for therapy using it. You don't have to check this out now as the deadline is not any time soon, but maybe after your A-levels!

Joining societies is the best way to make friends and start feeling more at home

I've also found these websites which seem useful!

This is all I can remember at the moment, but I'll send another reply if I think of anything else!

Ofc this is different for every uni but all the basic things are there. My firm choice is 5 hours away from home so I'm pretty terrified, but I also know that if I need to there's always a way to get home, and phone calls still exist! I'm planning on taking it slow and gradually getting myself through the change.

Good luck with everything! 😁

Hey, I recently got a diagnosis, and I start my firm choice in September.

I understand that it is difficult and it is a big change. To prepare myself, I keep going through the 'before you start uni' page for my university, I have every checklist you can think of, such as things to bring, buy, do, prepare, etc.

I have also attended two different open days to familiarise myself with the environment and professors. I have also been in contact with the university's disability team to arrange a support plan for when I start.

Once I start uni, I am going to try and attend as many social gatherings, as many of the welcome week activities as I can, and I intend to join a society.

The main thing is just getting prepared. I have been buying new stationery and clothes to make this waiting period before university more exciting than nervous. I know I will be nervous and overwhelmed the first few weeks/months, but that's natural whether autistic or not.

Finally, I just want to say good luck and have fun
