Why should I go to university of edinburgh

I am an international student stuck between going to uni of edinburgh or going to a uni in canada. Im leaning more towards edinburgh solely because it's much closer to home. Can anyone provide me with more info to make my decision easier? What's the community like? How's finding a job like after? Does the uni have good connections? Keep in mind I'm an international student. Anything like that.

Edinburgh is a mix of English student (majority), Scottish and many for USA. I would keep in min lots of people attending already knowing a large cohort bit that's not to try and put you off! I would say it's rather good for making connections for later on. the community feel isn't as prominent as other universities purely as its a city uni with 2 others unis there and accommodation is spread across the place. In saying that, much like anywhere else, it's down to how much effort you put into being involved etc. I personally didn't chose it as I knew too many people going and its academics aren't as high as the prestige makes it out to be (I know many people who got in with lesser grades and not much academic commitment etc) It is such a nice city and easy to grow and settle over the 4 year course. I don't know much about canda uni system but im inclined to say Edinburgh is a 'safer' choice in these senses.

Having a daughter who’s just completing a four year honours degree in Edinburgh, I could never understand her choice.

Academically I’d say it’s no better nor worse than other Unis. It does have some minor gravitas and is more of a social experience than others but not necessarily with your cohort, but accommodation is expensive.

Overall, I’d give it a miss.

Honestly I would second this! I got a lot of questioning after having declined the offer for durham (where I have to pay for tuition and had a conditional offer in comparison to not paying and unconditional). Honestly, seeing all my friends in Edinburgh im so happy with the choice I made not to go there!

You need to give more details. Is it an undergrad or postgrad, what sort of postgrad is that, what sort of degree is that. All universities have strengths in different disciplines. University of Edinburgh in general is very well-reputable, but finding a job in the UK market is an entirely different story depending on your sector. If you are wanting to stay in the country afterwards, you need to also know that the UK is looking to tighten Visa conditions for international graduates, and generally it is extremely hard. It is getting more expensive for companies to hire international graduates because of visa costs, so either you will have to be exceptionally outstanding in your resume and have personal connections that gives a bit more favour.

Yes, I’d second that, having experience of my sons partner, who is Chinese and came to the UK to do a Masters at Glasgow.

It took her a couple of years to secure an appropriate graduate entry into a career that would have taken her over the threshold. Just as well she was on a Partners Visa.

As it was it cost her over £1k visa fee and over £1.5k NHS fee for 30 months and then the same again before she gets permission to stay indefinitely.

Her Firm did offer to sponsor and pay for the Visa, but she declined it as she was already 18 months into the Partners Visa and it would have reset the clock.

Just as well with all the changes going on recently.

Anyway, it just highlights the potential problems in securing a suitable job after graduation.
