Unconditional offer for MA Creative Writing at UEA

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience. I applied for the MA Creative Writing prose track at UEA, but instead received an unconditional offer for the new more generalist MA Creative Writing track. In the offer it said I’d not been offered a place on the prose track, which is a shame but it seems odd to have not even been offered an interview.

I’ve unconditional offers to several other prestigious courses where I can focus on prose, but obviously the UEA course is renowned. I spoke to the course director and it, to me at least, seems like they’re still very much in the process of working out how the new course will run.

Keen to hear if anyone else has experienced similar, and what you’re planning on doing. As it stands I’m leaning on going elsewhere.

I’ve heard that this is a cash cow basically and that the “real” program is the prose fiction one

Hi @67885643

I am sorry to hear about your application to the MA creative writing prose track at UEA. It is great though that you have been offered a place on the MA creative writing course, which is also a great course and renowned at UEA. First of all I would recommend contacting admissions as they would be able to advise you further and provide you with feedback on your application. Here is the email address: [email protected].

As far as the difference between the standard creative writing course and the creative writing prose course, the prose course seems to focus more on traditional mediums of writing, whereas the standard creative writing course incorporates topics such as digital technology and AI and how these are re-shaping possibilities in writing. It also considers things such as how novels are being adapted to streaming platforms, games, etc. and in turn aims to equip the students to be adaptable to the change that technology is having on creative writing.

Here are the course pages for the general course:

Here are the course pages for the prose course:
https://www.uea.ac.uk/course/postgraduate/ma-creative-writing-prose-fiction

You can look through the modules to see the differences and if the general course would also be a course of interest for you. Creative writing at UEA overall is renowned and has had many famous alumni.

Any info about acceptance rate???

Hi @anonymous #1

In terms of acceptance rates, there are not set figures as it would depend every year.

However, the MA creative writing with prose is more selective than the MA in creative writing, so would be likely be more difficult to get onto this course.

Only the most promising candidates are invited to an interview for prose, and it is only after being interviewed that an offer could be made. The MA Creative Writing on the other hand, does not have an interview process, so offers are made to those who meet the academic requirements and provide a solid sample of work.

If you have any further questions please let me know

I would also love to know about recent years statics for prose fiction or at least in general how many apply? I want to commit to the program but don’t know if it’s up to par with some of the other programs I’ve been accepted to(with 20%\10%) acceptance rates. I would like to know if it’s about 50% per se or closer to 10%.

Hi. The same thing happened to me, I can't tell you how scared I got when I saw the word "unfortunately" in that email! I've had a discussion with the course director as well, he told me the class sizes are going to be a smidge smaller than the other strands for the September 2025 start. And from what I can tell from the course page, it offers all the same optional modules and has workshops like the others, so I don't think it's necessarily that different?

Ngl that "cash cow" comment on this thread did hurt my feelings a bit - but wouldn't a cash cow course have a much bigger cohort and not offer the same optional modules? It's a new course so it being a little less competitive is to be expected, since many of us didn't think to apply in the first place. I can't remember if I even really knew it existed.

All that being said it's still a great opportunity, and I doubt anyone who knows about UEA and creative writing would care if I didn't do the prose fiction strand. I know what I want to get out of it is mostly the teaching and the writer community aspect anyway. I am sort of looking forward to mixing mediums a bit since I won't be confined to prose, and also getting to write for "a digital world" sounds cool, but I don't see myself using AI. I'm diametrically opposed to that lol.

So at least in my case I think I'll be going, but obviously what you want to get out of a course might be different and I wish you luck on deciding. There's plenty of good courses around!

Hello to everyone on this thread! I've just completed my first semester of the new Creative Writing MA at UEA (starting in January 2025) and I can highly recommend it! From inside the course I can say it is definitely NOT a "cash cow". A lot of careful planning and thought has gone into the creation of this MA. The variety of forms and genres I've had the opportunity to experience and practice has had such a positive effect on my creative work. I've really loved it. If you'd like to find out more about how the course has been for me so far, this article contains a recent interview: How UEA is shaping my writing. There's also an excellent video at the bottom of this page which resonates with my own experiences. I wish you all the best with your own writing journeys. Hopefully this is helpful! And maybe I'll even get to meet some of you this semester.
