Wider reading for UCAS

Hello! So I'm having some difficulty at the moment with figuring out wider reading for my personal statement. I'm interested in children's nursing but a lot of the books around focus on the U.S. Is it still beneficial to read and include these or should they be U.K specific?

Hi @Strawberry-Laces,

Great question! It’s absolutely fine to include wider reading from U.S. sources in your personal statement—what matters most is showing genuine interest in child nursing and engaging with relevant topics. While some details like legislation may differ, many themes are universal and still very useful to reflect on.

You might also want to explore free online courses (MOOCs) from platforms like Coursera, FutureLearn, or The Open University—they’re a great way to deepen your knowledge without a huge time commitment. News articles, commentaries, podcasts and documentaries also count as wider reading. The Conversation is a good starting point—it’s written by academics: https://theconversation.com/uk

Hope that helps—and best of luck with your personal statement and university application! 🙂

Thank you for your advice! I have just started a MOOC but I will definitely look into podcasts and documentaries!

Hi,

I'm currently a 2nd year childrens nurse at Wrexham University, through my experiences so far I have found the course has been amazing.

For your personal statement: Similarly to what other people have mentioned to you, ensure you include any qualifications and experience you have, make sure you link it to how completing these things has made you ready and given you the abilities for a nursing degree, and incorporate the 6C's (this is more if you are looking into English universities, as Wales and Scotland have their own versions - however they do still look for similar!). I found that journals from British Journal of Nursing and research from Royal College of Nursing etc. were all very beneficial for me in terms of wider reading!

Wrexham Univeristy have put together a guide to the 'Perfect Personal Statement' also make use of UCAS's Step-by-step guide on 'How to write your undergraduate personal statement' (links below 🙂)

In terms of what universitys are looking for in future generation nurses it might be worth giving a read over the following link, this goes into more depth about what universities look for, and top tips for applying to study nursing! In terms of applying for the course this will vary depending on if you apply via UCAS or through the university itself, but you will most likely recieve an offer for an interview before recieving your conditional offer.🙂

I hope this helps you and free to ask any more questions you may have, good with your applications and interviews!
