Application advice - work experience and application deadline approaching for CELE

Application Advice Work experience

Work experience is a fantastic way to boost your personal statement, while picking up valuable skills you can use throughout your career. Whether it’s through placements, volunteering, or a part-time job, gaining hands-on experience can help show your passion for a subject and make your application stand out.

It’s also a brilliant way to explore what you might want to do in the future. For instance, a career in nursing offers many different roles, and early work experience could help you figure out which areas you enjoy and which might not be the best fit for you.

Some university courses may require specific work experience with a set number of hours, so it’s always worth checking the details with the university or course tutors. For many other courses, the focus is more on reflecting on your time at work. What did you find interesting and inspiring? What challenges did you face? and how did you overcome them? This kind of insight can really enhance your personal statement.

Even if your work experience isn’t directly related to the course, it can still be valuable. Many jobs develop transferable skills that are highly relevant in a range of careers. For example, working as a barista demonstrates excellent customer service skills. Or perhaps you’ve been part of a sports team or taken part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award—both great examples of teamwork and commitment.

No matter what type of work experience you have, take the time to reflect on what you’ve learned and how it’s helped shape your future aspirations.
