Maintenance loan eligibility: UK citizen living in EEA by Dec 2020

Hello,

I am planning to do a PGCE in the UK and am working out if I am eligible for a maintenance loan. I grew up in the UK, did my undergrad in the UK, then moved to Ireland in September 2020 for my PhD and have lived here since.
Here, ( https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/eligibility-for-home-fee-status-and-student-support-in-england/ ) it says 'For courses starting between 1 August 2021 and 1 January 2028, UK nationals and their family members living in the EEA or Switzerland will generally be eligible for home fee status and tuition fee and maintenance loans if they meet the following conditions:

they have lived in the EEA, Switzerland, or the UK for at least the last three years;

they were living in the EEA or Switzerland on 31 December 2020;

they have lived continuously in the EEA, Switzerland, or the UK between 31 December 2020 and the start of their course.'

Would it be possible to confirm that I would be eligible for a maintenance loan?

Hi Connor,

We always advise making an application for an assessor to review and determine eligibility. Currently these are taking 12 working days as an estimated timescale. You may be eligible for full support if you were a resident in Ireland at the end of the transition period (31st December 2020) as a person who has exercised right of residence. This category will only apply to those who take up residence in Ireland after 31st December 2020.

Ordinarily resident in the Common Travel Area (the UK, Islands and Ireland) for the three years prior to the first day of the first AY of the course (with at least part of that residence period spent in Ireland).

You are not required to be ordinarily resident in England on the first day of the first AY of the course.

If you are looking to apply for a course beginning this September then I would advise doing as soon as you can. Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

Thanks for getting back to me. When I call up SFE they say they cannot discuss eligibility on the phone and I've been unable to find the live chat feature on the website. I am trying to confirm my eligibility before applying to decide whether or not the course will be financially viable for me. Any other ways to get in touch with SFE?

I am a little puzzled by what you mean by 'This category will only apply to those who take up residence in Ireland after 31st December 2020.'?

Hi Connor,

The criteria means if you've exercised a right of residence then you may be eligible for the full support - otherwise it may be tuition fees only. But the assessors will review this and confirm eligibility.

Regarding you mentioning trying to contact us you can get in touch with us by via phone. You can find our contact details here: https://www.gov.uk/contact-student-finance-england. The live chat pops up on your account when you login and when an agent is available. These are open from 8.am to 7.pm. Thanks, Jason
