Newcastle or Leicester medicine?

i'm having trouble deciding. the courses seem identical to me and distance from home isn't an issue

well newcastle is probably more prestigious with better grad prospects, but for med it doesn't really matter that much

few things that could make a difference for you (will preface that I'm a Leicester medic and know next to nothing about newcastle):

Full body cadaveric dissection (not sure if newcastle is prosection or dissection, but Leicester is very into dissection).

Size of the city, which part of the UK do you want to be in. If you're keen to travel around, Leicester is more central/close to birmingham/london. If you'd rather be up north, go for newcastle

examinations - leicester med is quite unique in that it only has exams at the end of the year, not around christmas as well unlike many other unis

cost of living (can't speak to what it is at NCL, but Leicester is generally considered cheaper than other places in the UK)

imo, prestige doesn't mean much in this case. Everyone graduates into the same crazy system. Leicester grads have, in my experience, positive views towards their time at Leics. Generally, it's well regarded for medicine and medical research. I haven't heard of NCL being overwhelmingly more prestigious (but again, not informed on it)

having had a skim of the website, here's some other things I noticed: NCL does elective in 4th year not 5th, NCL does clinical year placements in zones where you spend the entire year in a zone (ex. third year in zone 1) while Leicester rotates you around regional hospitals but still has you in Leics for at least part of the year (so you have three blocs in third year, where up to 2/3 can be somewhere else in the midlands) - this only matters if you really want to have a home base, again I haven't experienced NCL med (so if this interpretation is wrong feel free to correct) but I'd imagine spending a whole year somewhere else would deter some.

just some food for thought! in the end, you'll be happy wherever you choose, so follow your gut if it's saying something.

If you want male to female ratios and diversity rates how is a student going to know exact figures? Obviously its better to look at the actual stats rather than getting a students opinion because obviouslt they can’t tell you exactly how many men and women or ethnically diverse people there are

Hi!

I am a current 4th year medical student at the University of Leicester. I don't have exact stats to give you on gender ratios, but I can tell you that there is a pretty even split between men and women. In my year at least I think there are slightly more women than men. Leicester is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the UK so if diversity is something you are looking for then you should definitely consider Leicester.

I do not know much about Newcastle, but I very much agree with happytree100's answer regarding the strengths of UoL. I applied because of full body dissection, the small group work teaching style and Leicester's central location in the country - it's pretty easy to get to everywhere from Leicester! I have found it to be a very friendly uni where all the year groups collaborate and help each other out with study materials, tips and social events etc.

My advice would be to speak to current students from each uni, and if possible to visit each city to see if you could picture yourself living there for 5 plus years! Please feel free to message me if you have any questions about medicine, Leicester or uni in general.

Frankie (4th year Medical Student)
