Help i want to be a dentist and need advice!

Hi I'm currently in year 13 doing biology, psychology and English language and will be taking a gap year to resit some GCSEs and do a level chem. My GCSEs were very very average with 6s in everything due to me being a young carer at the time but I'm planning to resit GCSEs like maths and sciences to get them up. Also if anyone has any info on how I can do a level chem in my gap year without having to pay hundreds of pounds I'm very open to suggestions. Also how do I tell universities I was a young carer do I need proof? I'm very unfamiliar with this whole process because I didn't apply this year.
I also have work experience shadowing a dentist, volunteering with different humanitarian charities, I have done articles and scripts for talk shows about dentistry and the importance of it, I have a dentistry mentor certificate, I have some extra curricular like taekwondo and boxing.

After I get all my grades and a good UCAT Inshallah I'm going to be applying to Newcastle, Leeds, Bristol, Plymouth and Kings as I do also live in a contextual area so praying they give me an offer. I'm super set on wanting to be a dentist and don't really care how many gap years I have to take. Any advice, help, mentoring will be amazing

Thank you

hi!
This might not be much help, but i would like to let you know that some (if not all, as I'm not too sure) will require some kind of proof. I think you can put this information into the 'More About You' section of your UCAS application. Being a young carer also gives you contextual offers, as well as the contextual area criteria. You are in a great position, so as long as you have good enough grades and personal statement, I'm sure getting into these unis will be no problem! With your circumstances and extra-curriculars, I think you would be a strong candidate!

Good Luck

Firstly thank you so much for your reply!

I looked into ucas about the young carer thing and it and it said that I need a letter from my head of sixth which I can do hopefully! if not I'm not too worried if they don't know that was/am a young carer or not because I'm going to aim to get the highest grades possible

Thank you your reply has given me a little hope

great mindset but contextual perks can also apply when they're selecting who to give an interview to, especially if you get a weak UCAT score, so try your best to get the evidence

hey twin,

Basically, i wanted to do dentistry for ages but my head of sixth from discouraged me from doing it so i stopped pursuing it however, its my dream so now im going to be taking a gap year and reapplying after just not trying to apply to anything first time around
So the main tips i can give you is really try for your year 12 mocks and get as high as you possibly can for your ucat, then apply to two foundation year courses and 2 unis that are safer for dentistry also bec out of your 5 options im pretty sure you can apply to dent using 4. But thats literally all the help i can give you as of right now bec im literally in the same boat as you. Also remember your parents are not going to be the one doing all the hard work that is getting you into dentistry. I come from a strict household that also disapproved of my gap year but really and truly i know how much i am working and i know that path im pursuing so i sat my parents down explained it to them they still didnt understand. I took that as a sign to just carry on doing what im doing and just let them understand in their own timing.

so i hope this helps if you have any other questions or support feel free to msg me

Okay so what happened was that my head of sixthform really discouraged me so thats why i didnt pursue it but i realised idc and i will do dentistry no matter how long it takes me so im sitting my a levels then im gonna do my ucat and apply. Honestly im ready to take 3 gap years if i have to bec at the end of the day doing dentistry in my eyes is worth it, about your strict parents not letting you do a gap year, at the end of the day its your decision so explain everything to them hide nothing, i did that and they eventually came around to me taking a gap year

Hopefully this helps and my biggest tip would be to try your hardest during year 12 get those predicted, get that ucat done, keep your options OPEN and apply where you want to! not where anyone else tells you to bec at the end of the day youre gonna be the one studying, staying and getting a degree from that uni while also paying thousands of pounds so make it worth it!

Hi there! Great to hear you're interested in studying dentistry here at Plymouth! 😊

Although I don't study dentistry, I am a current undergraduate student so I'd be more than happy to help answer any questions you might have about the university, facilities, campus, or city!

Best of luck! 😄

hey ! inshallah everything works out amazingly for you friend

i’m in a similar position. am y13 and will probably have to resit a subject or two bc a levels are NOT going well 😭. i rly wanna go kcl or qm so i can stay in london 🥲 my parents have only just come to terms with me taking one gap year (bc i got rejections) but you said even if you have to take two, you’ll do so because dentistry is what you rly wanna do. i’m the same, but i think if i had to take another gap year my parents will force me to just do pharmacy instead. they already want me to just do it this year rather than bother with a gap year but like that’s the rest of my life that they’re messing with just because they don’t want me to take a single year 🙏 any advice ? how did/would you convince your parents and stuff :/
