Accomodation advice for PhD student in Cambridge

Hi everyone!

I’ve just received an offer for a fully funded PhD in Law at the University of Cambridge, and I’m currently trying to decide on accommodation.

My assigned college is Sidney Sussex, which I’m really happy about but I’ve heard that many of the rooms, especially in the first year, aren’t ensuite and tend to be a bit dated. Since I’ll be starting a PhD (rather than an undergraduate degree), I’m considering whether it might be better to find private accommodation that’s more modern and comfortable.

I’ve been looking into Student Castle, which looks very new, well-equipped, and conveniently located close to Sidney. Has anyone stayed there or made a similar choice between college and private accommodation for postgraduate study? I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences to help me decide.

Thanks so much in advance!

It's generally considered better to stay in College for your first year, while you adapt to the UK, Cambridge, first year work, and everything else, and then move out in the second and third years.
