Are my stats good enough for Oxford?

Hi! I’m hoping to apply for law although I’m not sure if applying to Oxford would be wasting one of my five, I’ve head Oxford really look at GCSEs compared to other universities and whilst they weren’t bad they certainly weren’t great. If I have no chance then I’d rather apply to one where I stand a chance so any advice would be appreciated!

My GCSEs:
Grade 8: English literature, english language, engineering, physics and maths.
Grade 7: Chemistry, biology, sociology and computer science.
Grade 6: Spanish and further maths.
(88888777766)

My A level predicted:
English literature- A*
Maths- A
Computer Science- A
(A*AA)

EPQ- A

I have a broad selection of things and work experience for my personal statement and whilst I haven’t properly sat the LNAT I’m hoping for 27-33 type of range.

My main concern is my GCSEs, I went to a comprehensive state school that preformed slightly above average (attainment 8 was 52 I believe) whilst I was in the top 10% of my school I’m concerned they’re not good enough. Please be honest with your thoughts and thankyou!!

You have 5A* 4A 2B at GCSE, which is good enough for Oxford.

I wonder if you are also applying to any of the LSE, UCL, KCL, SOAS, Durham and Bristol?

Ultimately, your LNAT performance will determine whether you're shortlisted or not.

Also, other factors such as your reference, predicted A-Level grades, and UCAS Personal Statement will be 'scrutinised' by the admissions tutors.

Moreover, if you impress the admissions tutors in the interview(s), then you could be made an offer regardless of other factors. 😉

Have you chosen an Oxford college yet? If not, take a look at: "The Oxford University - Alternative Prospectus" 🙂

College Suggester - Oxford University Alternative Prospectus

Here is the 2024 Oxford Admissions Law Report:

Law-Admissions-Report-2024-25.pdf

PS: Oxford Law gets 9 applicants per place, however, Cambridge gets 7 applicants per place and they also interview more applicants, too. However, despite Cambridge not caring as much about GCSE grades as Oxford, Cambridge asks for A*AA grades and Oxford AAA. But some Cambridge colleges are known to ask for A*A*A grades. So, Oxford would be the 'ideal' choice.

If you desperately want to go to Oxford, then apply anyway. Since you’re considering it as being a wasted choice on your UCAS, it sounds like you’re not too bothered, in which case I would just apply somewhere else. Applying to Oxford is a LOT of work, and it’s not worth it if you don’t really want it.

OP, please don't rely on what you have heard or on the myths which people cheerfully and irresponsibly repeat on this forum. Please look at the websites of the universities that you are interested in. Oxford and Cambridge take broadly the same approach to GCSE results, as you can see from their websites.

I shall leave you to look those up for yourself. "Look it up" is Rule One for every law student, and every practising lawyer.
