Clearing for Chem Eng

How often do russel groups uni like birmingham or leeds go into clearing for said course? I have an offer from Manchester for 3A but I think I will only get 2A 2B

Chem Eng is not a mega-competitive subject and therefore its possible that you may still be accepted as a 'near miss'. Try not to worry!

Because I have worked in Admissions in numerous Universities.

Extra places are not a great indication of what might be in Clearing, as obviously that depends entirely on this year's A level results. However, Civil-Eng is similar to Chem-Eng in that its not as competitive as something like Mech-Eng, and therefore its possibly that you may be accepted as a near-miss to avoid the Uni putting that course into Clearing. This is impossible to predict in advance - all you can do is work your socks off in the time you have left, and try not to worry.

What about accounting and finance? Is that a competitive course or can near misses be accepted?

Depends on the University, but usually competitive,

Btw, all near-miss' acceptances will depend entirely on results vs. places, and that Unis desire to avoid Clearing.

oh damn, but u said earlier that chem eng arent that competitive, how true is that?
For ANY course and any university:
If you’re worried about missing your offer conditions then CALL your university and speak to them about what happens in that situation.

They’ll often be happy to explain whether your course normally has any flexibility over results and what they take into account when making decisions about which applicants to accept with lower grades (ie do they focus on maths A level grades mostly and worry less about history or are they looking for no grades below a certain level etc etc)

Yes, Chem Eng isn't as competitive as many other engineering subjects and therefore will often have the scope to accept some 'near miss' in August - but it will always depend on the results other people get, and if that Uni fills the course with those who met their offer conditions, there will be no other 'spaces to fill'.

The bottom line is that the only way to ensure you are accepted for any subject at any Uni is to achieve the offer grades. There may be near-miss acceptances - but no-one is guaranteed this, and I actually disagree with PQs advice to phone the Uni. They will usually just trot out the mantra as above - that 'No-one knows' and that you will just have to wait for August. You would be more usefully engaged in just doing some extra focussed revision that hanging on a phone line to be told that.
