Student Finance Advice.

Hi all, I am looking for some advice on my situation. I originally enrolled on a 4 year integrated masters in mathematics, which gave me the impression that the total funding from SFE would be 4 years ( length of the course) 1 gift year. I did not complete my first year and changed to a 4 year integrated masters in engineering. I suspended my third year of engineering for health reasons and was planning to repeat the year, and also make a compelling personal reasons appeal for that same year. I've just got off the phone from an SFE advisor, and they were adamant that an undergraduate only gets 4 years total funding irrespective of the course length.I'm confused as on the SFE website it outlines the length of the course 1 year? In short, I thought I still had one year of tuition fee funding left and would only need to appeal for one additional year, but I was told I need to appeal for two years of funding instead? I'm confused as the website and advisor have contradicted one another. Is this just a complete misunderstanding on my part ? Kind Regards,

Hi there,

We fund all years of a course + 1 additional year and then subtract any previous study.

So if you do have CPR evidence you can apply for funding for that additional year.

I've enclosed further information on this below: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/going-back-to-uni-or-repeating-a-year

Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

Thank you for the prompt response. The issue I'm facing is that with my most recent finance application I have received the maintenance loan but not the tuition fee ?

Am I correct in thinking that from the very beginning (mathematics) I had a total of 5 years (length of course + gift year) of funding. Using the equation you mentioned it would be a 4 year course + 1 gift year - year 1 maths - year 3 engineering. So I should be left with 1 year of tuition fee funding and only need to make one CPR application for the 3rd year of engineering?

Kind regards,

Hi Ryan. In these cases we would advise contacting us directly as we cannot view any of your previous study from here. We can only provide general information in that you would receive funding for the length of your course plus one additional year. Any further queries would need to be handled over the phone or via live chat from your account. Thanks, David
