Ecology/Environmental Science at Uni

Can anyone suggest some good unis for environmental science/conservation and ecology? I want to study it when I go, but i’m in year 12 and don’t know where to start. Ideally the course would include several field trips overseas. Also any ideas for relevant experience?

I would begin by checking out the following website to find which Uni offers the course you're interested in Courses | UCAS
What A' level subjects are you studying? Are you interested in the top universities (Russell Group)?

Thank you! I’m doing geography, biology, and psychology. I don’t mind whether the uni is russel group or not, but not looking at oxbridge

Lancaster has a good reputation for Env Sci. You may want to look at some of the geography courses as well. Some Unis have modules focusing on ecology, conservation etc.

Hi @poppyfurno
Lancaster has some great environmental science and ecology and conservation courses, so might be worth a look. Lancaster is not a Russel group but consistently ranks highly in university league tables. Also, here is the options to do both of these courses as placement years or study abroad if this is something your intrested in.
Throughout my degree studying physical geography at Lancaster, i studied a few environmental science modules, which is one of the things i've loved about Lancaster, is the flexibility to choose a wide range of optional modules from within the Lancaster Environment Center (LEC). Also i found the degrees at Lancaster to be quite practical and hands on with lots of opportunities for fieldwork and lab practical's, which i personally liked as it allows you to understand concepts better.
Also, in terms of Lancaster more generally, its located in the Northwest really close to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, which provided great fieldtrip opportunities throughout my time at university.
Here's the course pages for the 2 courses here at Lancaster:
Environmental Science Environmental Science BSc Hons (F750) - Lancaster University
Ecology and Conservation Ecology and Conservation BSc Hons (C180) - Lancaster University
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

I have similar interests to you and would recommend looking at Exeter, UEA and maybe Suffolk as they have a lot of focus on field work and their degree is quite broad i think despite the lower entry requirements. Hope that helps 🙂

Hello!

It's so exciting you are considering studying environmental science! As a third year Earth and Environmental Science student I have loved my time studying here at Lancaster. Following on from what Jasmine has said - I've loved the diversity of modules available in LEC throughout the degree as well as the incredible amount of practical work. In first year you may be in the lab approximately 2-3x per week (depending on the modules you choose) as well as lots of local day field trips where this transitions in second and third year to more residential trips and less lab work. For example, in second year I spent a week in the Lake District as well as a week on the Isle of Mull. Then in third year I had the amazing opportunity to spend a week in the Swiss Alps and a week on Mt Etna in Sicily! Lancaster has incredible teaching staff and some amazing opportunities! I would recommend doing some research between all the universities and looking at all the different module choices to understand what you are interested in before deciding on a university but this is a very exciting time!

Hope this helps and let us know if you have anymore questions,
Lucy (Lancaster University Student Ambassador)

Cumbria University has ecology courses but they are aimed mostly at woodlands/forestry.

As for gaining relevant experience, volunteering with local wildlife trusts, conservation charities (e.g, Groundwork often look for volunteers https://www.groundwork.org.uk/) or even joining eco-focused clubs at school/college can be a great start.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your university applications 🙂
