Hi there!
My name is Nally, a second-year student majoring in Media, Communications and Sociology with Quantitative Methods at City St George’s, University of London.

It’s great that you’re already thinking ahead to prepare for university. Here is what you can do to prepare over the summer:

News consumption: Stay updated with national and international news from a variety of sources (BBC, The Guardian, Reuters) and look at how different outlets frame the same story (analyzing tone of voice, target audience, outlet’s political leaning or the specific aspect that the outlet highlight)

Enhance writing skills: Expose yourself to diverse writing styles and genres to broaden your understanding of storytelling. Explore how different platforms use different storytelling techniques.

Basic skills: Try getting started with tools like Canva and Capcut to get you comfortable with designing and editing skills.

Online courses: Websites like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning and Future Learn have free short courses on journalism, media, or digital storytelling that you could try.

I hope my answer helps! 😊

Hello there,

Firstly very exciting that you are about to start your journey into the world of Journalism.

I am a broadcast journalism graduate from Salford Uni so I thought I would come give some content that we studied but also some general advice to prep you for studying Journalism.

In terms of reading, I wish I could remember all the books we studied but I remember the big topics. One thing that you can start to get your head around now is journalism law. An important thing to know and most likely a topic you will be taught in your first year. Good books for this are:

Law for Journalists: a guide to media law (6th edition)

The Journalism guide to media law

Essential law for Journalists

Not sure which institution you are attending so you might be covering one or all of these books during your studies or they might have other content but these books are hefty and good starts to understanding the law behind journalism.

On the flip side, I would say the best way to prepare for being a journalist is to absorb as much of the content as possible through all mediums. Watch more of the news on TV, listen to more news broadcasts/ podcasts on the radio, read more articles online and on print, scroll on social media news platforms to see what they post and how they post it. Just absorb as much as possible and that will really help you prep for the world of Journalism.

I do hope this helps and if you need anymore information feel free to ask anything.

All the best with your journey and hope to see you in a newsroom one day.
