York University??

My daughter has put York Uni down as her 1st choice for Chemistry. Now having second thoughts as hearing it's a bit 'boring' and not much of a student social/partying scene.

She's not a massive 'clubber' but would at least like there to be a few options...apart from Student Union events. Prob doesn't help that most of her mates are going to the 'bigger' northern Uni's.

Also a very keen footballer...

All feedback welcomed.

Hello,
Thank you for the query. You are right that York (both the uni and city) don't have the biggest clubbing scene compared to Manchester or Newcastle. But, we’re only an hour from those cities (and Leeds) and students do travel if that’s what they want. We’re far from boring though and we do get a lot of people travelling to us. We have a really nice video on YouTube from a current student going into depth about the nightlife.

Sport is quite big in York and we’re lucky that we have uni teams and college teams so you can get a balance between what level you want to play at. Our sports teams are listed along with our societies on our website and there’s a whole section of videos on York sports teams on Youtube, again made by our lovely students.

On a personal note, I moved from London a couple of years ago and was worried about moving somewhere boring but have found it’s the opposite, not only is there lots happening but it’s much more accessible than when I was in London. You’re both welcome to chat to current students on one of our platforms and I think we’ve got two keen footballers on there at the moment. Alternatively, let us know here if you have any other questions.
All the best, E.

just because it isn’t up there with the big clubbing cities doesn’t mean it’s non existent

I'm at York at the moment, and the nightlife is way way better than I expected before I started. There are 4 or 5 decent clubs, and they're always busy on their respective nights. Plenty of pubs and join any society, especially sports ones, and you'll have weekly socials and club nights. I definitely wouldn't worry about it being boring.

in freshers week can you still get into the big clubs without having bought tickets beforehand? the same way you could get in if it wasn’t freshers week but later on in the year

From what i remember i'm pretty sure you can, but if you get the wristband from your college you can get in to certain clubs on certain nights without paying on the door. But if you didn't want to go to the club night the college had organised and just go somewhere else you definitely will be able to.
