Son got awarded different amount to daughter

I have 3 children all starting their uni courses this September…
- twin girls
- elder son who started last year but withdrew to reapply to different uni and course.

I am a solo parent earning below the threshold, and receive UC. They all live with me. All 3 have applied for the maximum maintenance loan amount.

The twin girls have had confirmed of maximum amount of loan, but my son has been awarded less. I think he still owes an amount from last year after he withdrew, as he’s paying it down from earnings.

Is his lesser award due to the amount still owed from his withdrawal? Is the amount owed offset against this year? Or is there another reason for him being less?

Thanks in advance

Hi there. Is your son also in the Final Year of their course? Have they received any letters mentioning an overpayment? Thanks, David

Hi no he’s not in final year, he’ll be entering first year again after withdrawing from first year (after 6 weeks) at a different uni last September. Because he withdrew, he was required to pay back the ‘unused’ portion of the loan (even though it was used to pay for accommodation so wasn’t really ‘unused’). Which he’s paying back monthly.

All 3 will be entering first year.

Hi there. It may be the case that the overpayment amount is being clawed back and deducted from the entitlement. As we can only provide general information from here I cannot answer this for certain. We can only advise that you contact us over the phone or via live chat and we can look into this further. Thanks, David
